They don't reflect market prices, but they do portend market direction. Lots of coins are dropping in prices. Most Bust halves in XF and AU are way overpriced and available...and did I already say damn ugly? Draped material, if choice and with nice eye appeal, on the other hand, probably won't see much of a real drop in prices, at least not in the VG-XF range.
Ironically, draped bust halves went UP in the Quarterly II greysheet that came out a couple weeks ago....of course, those prices were probably too low for reality.

Yeah? Greysheet finally pegged those higher? Those DBH were always showing too low in the Greysheet than reality levels from G-XF, sometimes AU. Also the earlier CBH through about 1819.

WOW! There is hope for me yet. That's one of the coins I could use.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Old news that is finally reflected in price guides. The series, on average, dropped about 25% in prices realized by late 2008. They are still selling at multiples over 2000 prices, an AU50 was $1500 back then, compared to $4500 now. I have about 75 draped bust halves, most were purchased in 1997-2004 at 30-60% of current prices. Half of the best collections were sold in the last 3 years - Reiver, Westmoreland, Bayside, Meyer, and another privately. This caused a glut of DBH's on the market.

There was no way the economic downturn would not effect coins, especially higher end coins.
I believe that when some of us started saying on these boards that the money being lost on Wall Street would effect this hobby many here did not believe it could happen....well it happened. And I believe that the slow drift downward will stay with us for a while. No real bounce IMO.
Not a problem if you are a collector, but those plastic flippers might want to start lightening their positions if they haven't already.
I for one believe that this is healthy for the hobby in the long run.

If prices keep heading south on the halves I might be able to afford a couple of them.

1. The Bust Halves have had a spectacular run the past 4 years.
2. A huge number of marginal specimens is overhanging the market,
at prices higher then they should be.
3. Truly choice AU-58, MS-64 and MS-65 examples are getting to be as scarce
as hens teeth, and the prices for those are still strong.
4.When prices are dropping, is the time to start looking for nice pieces that you might
be able to bargain a better price for.

Of course that's when I bought the majority of mine.
