BUST HALF DOLLARS ARE LOSING VALUE FAST!

Check out the PCGS retail listings for Capped Bust Half Dollars. The red prices are most everywhere, and many are for quite a large drop in price.

Still slightly overpriced at those AU grades!
  • Probably a needed drop... they seemed to have hit a ceiling of price resistance early this year...at least at the shows I've been at...I've seen much less interest being shown to them then there was a year or two ago...
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

Cool, now repeat the same percentage drop every month until the end of the year and MAYBE AU prices will be back to a reasonable level.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

I seem to be running into a wall then. Trying to find nice PCGS graded coins at the price guide cost in 40 to 55 grades has been a constant case of being out bid.
Maybe the top end is comming down but mid grades seem to be pretty constant to me.

Still way above the prices I paid recently for a couple of Ch AU's....these seem to be readily available for under $500 (and I don't get interested until they're closer to $400).

I was outbid on nearly everything I bid on at the Bowers and Downey sales in LA and my bids were ABOVE those levels (AU55-58).

Correct me if I am wrong...a few years ago, Legend was publicly offering to buy PCGS AU-58 bust halves for $500. If so, they have a way to go before they are cheap.

The bust halves can't lose value fast enough for me. I want to do an AU58 set.

I would hope that most of us appreciate what PCGS and David Hall are doing, in trying to keep a guide current. There is no way that any price is accurate for a particular coin, but the attempt to weekly advise us of their take on the market for all series, in all grades is really a monsterous undertaking.

If you collect CBH's, and have been doing so for several years, you can see the trends that are appearing today. Based on auction prices realized, and dealer to dealer transactions, prices for the more common dates and grades have been decreasing the last 18 months. An unusually nice AU will still sell above these present guides, but overall, there is less demand, and a soft market is reflecting today's pricing.

Not true for the rarer dates and higher grades( though generic 65's probably need an adjustment along with the circ grades).

Some increases have occurred, and more are necessary, based on recent sales. But that may not occur until they find an auction result. I recently paid way over guides for a pq 1807 50/20 in 64. And another example traded for 30% more than I paid this month. ( within 4 months ago).

So don't think you can wait out further decreases for the nicer rarer dates. There are too few, and too many of us who want them.

my view is as an observer not an expert in the series. Nice coins with outstanding surfaces are not lower price regardless of the price list.
Attractive good for grade material is still not that easy to buy, old or original attractive tone and color examples as well just don't go for
what a slabbed standard white or conserved coin goes for those are taking a hit I think

I see a great deal of lower end material as well as unattractive or coins conserved too much even in slabs many nice white AU's are out there. They have been over priced for sometime in my opinion.

Can't the same thing be said about a lot of coin series in this market?

I seem to recall Legend offering $750 for properly graded AU58s within the last year.

You still will have a hard time finding an honestly graded PC MS 65 for $9K.

I seem to recall the highest Legend offered was around $675 for decent PCGS 58s. I know there were some PCGS 58s at the ANA going for around $650. Current PCGS retail at $900 sounds about right for the common dates/marriages.

Damn, I just noticed my 1817/3 in 53 made a move from 3 years ago....almost a double according to the pcgs price guide. It has a plus sign this week too. image

I remember buying XF-45s for $60 about 10 years ago by the handful. And have continued to buy up until present - just bought these last month. I will continue to add to my collection whatever the market direction. Maybe in 30 years when I retire I consider getting out

The dipped out lusterless slightly worn coins often seen in MS62 slabs have made it appear that the series has lost value. Solid Uncs easily bring $2000 and sharply struck lustrous and original AUs $1000.

the au's I believe are way overpriced. the spread between an au50 and au53 to au55 to au58 to ms60 is just crazy imho.
