I guess we're playing the rest of the season for one of the "Toilet Bowls". These guys suck!! My classmates that I went to school with wouldn't have let the program sink to the levels of the last decade. Absolutely terrible. Yes, I'm pissed.

That last set of downs ... just didn't look like ND was on the same page ... plays just did not look crisp.

At this point, a loss is a loss ... ND needs to step up and WIN a big game ... I think it's been quite a while!

very disappointing. then they have an extra point missed so they are playing for the tie??? unbelievable. they should have let claussen drop back and throw the whole game. they needed flloyd today to throw it up to and let him get it.

ND showed a lot of heart in that 4th quarter, IMO, to rally the way they did. When SC went up 34-14, I didn't think ND would get any closer than that. A tough loss, but they played with guts, esp on that last drive. My respect for them is greater than before this game.

Great fourth quarter- tough loss. ND is exciting to watch again and that is more than half the battle. They can still win 8 games

I didn't either. I thought the rout was on. Kinda hard to celebrate after that near epic collapse, especially since a lack of discipline was almost our undoing.

ND lost , but I'm glad this was a great game to the end. I thought the USC route was a possiblity there for a bit. I was pissed at the last play call, until I saw the replay and realized #18 Kambra looked like he was going to be open for the td catch if he did not slip. USC did make some really bad mental mistakes at the end there, that I thought was going to be huge if they lost. I also thought that Weis did not manage the clock very well at the end either. Anyhow USC looked very good on the offensive side and the freshman qb really showed up for the big game. Also watching USC tight end have a hell of game, had me thinking why did ND not utilize our big tight end target Kyle Rudolph more in this game? Seems he doesn't get enough throws to him not only this game but previous games.

Sorry Bill, I shouldn't have snapped at you, just getting tired of the mediocrity from the Irish. At least they won me $50.00 from one of my local friends by covering the points. Other than that, the game sucked.

Mike, the kids played their hearts out as they have done every game. This game showed how much we miss Floyd. Losing to a perennial top ten team by 7 pts isn't mediocrity, it means SC has more talent, but we are getting closer. I am old enough to remember the 50's and the years we won a handful of games, but I never lost my attraction to ND football. Look at all the thrills they given us since the 50's. The kids made me proud today, they played every second of the game. That is all you can really ask.

They played them better than the buckeyes did and beat a team that OSU lost to today, so keep your chin up.

Heh the neighbor to the east of me is an OSU grad and the couple to the west of me are Purdue grads and both of them fly their respective flags. I heard words from Gary I've never heard before, beer was on the Purdue couple as we all commiserated after the game. I can't believe that OSU is that bad and Pryor, he's not progressing. Best thing that happened to Michigan was losing him and getting Forcier instead. That will be an interesting game to watch.

Just back from the game and nothing to complain about the effort of the team yesterday. I can tell you that the USC players were obnoxious and could have been flagged several more times for unsportsmanlike penalties and excessive celebration. Pete Carroll was on the field more often than some of his players. Very proud of the way the ND players handled themselves in defeat and thought that Charlie coached a good game (not great) against a really tough team. USC has a ton of talent. Notre Dame should be the favorite in the rest of the games this year, which could still mean a BCS bid.

Well, they only fell to 26th in the AP poll and 30th in the Coaches poll. They'll need to run the table and move up approximately 18 spots to qualify for the BCS. It's possible but not probable.

I see a lot of the fans on this thread that actually appear excited that we were in the game until the end, and proud of the team for their effort. I think that's one of the things that saddens me about the current state of Notre Dame football. The fact that most of the fans no longer have the expectation of a win in the big games. The fact that Charlie indicated earlier in the week that the thing that was different in this game was that the kids "actually believed" they could win. The fact that the prior comment meant that evidently the kids didn't believe they could win before. These guys should have the confidence and belief that they will win EVERY time. I've never met a succesful athlete that didn't. This mediocrity and acceptance of it, has taken its toll on the psyche of our student athletes and our fans. Fans should not be encouraged by "moral victories", we should expect and demand a W. We had a "moral victory" in 2005 against USC, and where did that get us the last few years? I'm as guilty as the rest of the fans, as my standards have lowered over the years to just hope that we have a decent season and not get blown out. How sad is that? What does that say about Notre Dame football?

Charlie pissed me off with his comments both before the game and after the game. Before the game as mentioned above, and after the game when he said that if he had known before the game that we would have a chance to tie or win at the very end, that he would take that. That's basically admitting that he didn't think we would have a chance to win and actually be ahead at that point and be in the victory formation, so he would settle for a "chance" to win every time.

Go back to New England Charlie, or anywhere else that will take you. If we have to buy out your contract, I'll be the first to write ANOTHER donation check to the University. Good riddance.

they should n't let him talk but he is starting to get guys in with talent and the irish weren't doing that for a long time. i don't know who else they could bring in and still get players with top credentials with their standards. i think that is what was wrong with willingham, he could get the guys everyone wants. atleast weis gets them now we just need him to learn to coach and be less like bellichek.

Hang in there Mike. The rumor circulating on Friday was that Charlie is leaving at the end of this season for "health reasons." As far as happy with the outcome. I am certainly not happy, but love seeing good close meaningful Notre Dame football games again. Go Irish! Beat Eagles!

Wasn't pretty but they broke their losing streak against BC today. BC had 5 turnovers and we still only beat them by 4 points. However, I'll take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day of the week. Way to go Irish!! Can't wait for next weekend in San Antonio. Great Mexican food, pep rally at the Alamo, whole family will be with me, and Irish football...................life is good!!

Fair enough, but in this case I'd say BC turnovers put them in the position to win the game more than Clausen did.

Now #23 in the BCS Poll. Up 9 spots from last weeks #32. If the Irish can run the table and finish in the top 14, then they will "qualify" for a BCS bowl, but would have to rely on the bowls to pick them. If the Irish can move up to 8th, then they are automatically guaranteed a BCS bowl berth. I can see them potentially finishing in the top 14 if things fall into place. I put that at about a percentage chance of 62.98740. However, I don't see them finishing in the top eight, and put that at a percentage chance of 6.128101. image

A trouncing of Pittsburgh would help tremendously, plus as an added bonus, that would get under the skin of Mark May as well.

Got home a few hours ago from our trip to San Antonio. Way to go Irish!! Absolute domination.

We got into San Antonio about 4:30 PM on Friday. Just enough time to stop by our favorite restaurant of all time, Alamo Café. They have outstanding tortillas, queso, and hot sauce. Great stuff. The trip could have ended here, and I would have been a happy man.

Every few years that we go to Alamo, my wife likes to take the kids’ pictures in the same spot, here’s this years edition:

    image

    And the bounty:

    image
    image

My daughter Maven never succumbs to peer pressure, and she got chicken fried steak at a Mexican restaurant, gotta love that:

    image

After dinner, we made a hasty exit to get downtown to see the pep rally at the Alamo:

    image

We didn’t get there in time to get a prime seat so we staked out a spot where we knew the leprechaun, cheerleaders and band would have to come by:

    image

    image

Next up, was a trip to the Riverwalk, and a boatride for the whole family to take in some of the festive atmosphere and uniqueness of San Antonio:

    image

Then finally a late night back to the hotel, where it took forever to get the kids to sleep.

Saturday morning brought a new day and new enthusiasm. First stop was LuLu’s, as featured on my favorite show, Man Vs. Food:

    image

In Man Vs. Food, Adam eats a 3.5 lb. cinnamon roll AND two plate sized chicken fried steaks. My daughter Maven, wants to tackle the cinnamon roll, so here she is picking out her poison:

    image

Here it is prepared and at the table, that thing was MASSIVE. Great café, I had a huge chicken fried steak myself:

    image

After all that food, we needed a little exercise, so we took the kids to play some mini-golf. Maven has her own unique stroke:

    image

Maxfield got plenty of exercise chasing his ball so it wouldn’t go in the water:

    image

After mini-golf, we went back to the hotel to get a little r&r before the game, but for my kids, it wouldn’t be a vacation, unless they got to hit the pool:

    image

Finally, it’s gametime. Our seats were kind of high up, but the Alamodome was a nice venue, you could see well from any seat in the house. San Antonio rolled out the red carpet treatment for the Irish. The stadium was outfitted in blue and gold, (even the seats were blue and gold), the loudspeakers blared Notre Dame tunes, and all the stadium signs were Notre Dame. They truly gave it a home field feel for the Irish. Here’s the band in the pregame performance spelling out IRISH:

    image

Washington State was severely outnumbered fan wise, here’s a shot of their “sections”. I take it they don’t travel well:

    image

And finally, here comes the Irish!!

    image

Overall, a fun weekend, a 40-14 victory, family time, and a 6th victory that clinched their bowl eligibility.

    GO IRISH!!! Beat NAVY.

10 minutes left against Navy and trailing Navy by 14. Ball just bounced off back of Floyd for an INT. Clausen fumbled last possession on the 1. Two missed field goals. Can't stop the run. Charlie, you better hope they pull out some magic the last few minutes, if not, I hope you enjoyed your time in South Bend.

Charlie has to go. There I finally said it. I am sick to my stomach. All the talent on this team. It really is sad. What really makes me mad is that Charlie will say it is for health reasons and they will not be able to say they fired him. Congrats to Navy for kicking ND tail today! Outplayed and outcoached on both sides of the ball.

Thanks for the words about my grandpa. And my point about the Gator Bowl is just venting frustration that most Big East fans have, regarding ND's so-so membership in the Big East when it comes to football. You get a few of our bowl tie-ins, but they refuse to commit to the conference for football. Most want them to be either in or out. I'm not extremely passionate regarding the situation, but can see where people get annoyed.

By the way, I am not a ND hater like most. I have tremendous respect for the University, it's tradition and academics, but the preferential treatment for football gets under my skin at times. Looking forward to the USF-ND soccer matchup tomorrow in the Big East tourney, as well as our football game in South Bend in 2011.

Goot, if you get a chance to go the game in South Bend in 2011, by all means do so. You'll have a great time!! It's not like some other schools where the opposing fans are treated badly. It's a great experience, and win or lose, you'll probably have a good time. Hotels can be wicked expensive on game weekends, but if you are willing to drive an hour or so, you can find some cheaper. I know when i was a student, we didn't mind partying with the opposing fans after the game.
