What do you folks expect from the Sept L.B. Show and auctions?

I expect that the Show will be a repeat of searching for direction.
Serious collectors will continue to scarf up nice coins while prices
are more reasonable. I believe the Goldberg sale of coppers will
do extremely well and wiill set a number of records. The show itself
should be reasonably active and most dealers will be pleased.
Trash coins will continue to dwell in the cellar until dealers bite the
bullet and drastically reduce prices on these unsaleable coins.

<< <i>I expect to pick up a few more pre 1900 proofs for about 60 percent of what they brought over the last 18 months. I just hope that is not over paying for them. >>
I'm not aware of any series off by that much, even three cent nickels and Liberty nickels. Most pre 1916 proofs have held up very well.

I buy and sell pre 1900 proofs on a daily basis and unless the coins are absolutely hideous in appearance their values have held up fairly well over the last 18 months. They are defintely realizing more than 60 percent of what they brought a year or two ago. There is still retail demand for classic proofs, especially for those in the PR63-PR65 grade range. Actually those hideous looking coins were never expensive in the first place so they really haven't lost much value either.
As for the upcoming Long Beach show, remember that the ANA is only one month removed and most of the dealers attending Long Beach were in attendance at ANA. I don't think the show will be a disaster, but there will probably be a definite lack of new and fresh material.

Buyers who usually purchase $1499 worth of coins or less will not bother attending the bourse due to the California sales tax.
Financial distress will be evident on the bourse floor as many dealers with "ordinary" coins fail to make expenses for the show. In spite of this, there will still be resistance to price cutting.
Collectors who are actively buying will be very demanding. The coin will have to "all there" and then some.
I agree that there won't be much follow-through from the large cent sale...I just wish I could afford some of the good stuff from that. I could sell my house and still not cover the 1799.
past 2 L.B. shows have had pretty good retail on fri & sat due to rapidly rising spot.

<< <i>Any positive results from the large cent auction will not carry over to the bourse floor. Many serious buyers of the large cents, if they attend in person at all, will not even bother to stop by the bourse floor. >>
I think we'll see a tremendous amount of trading on the Large Cents at the show and on the aftermarket, just like with the previous major copper auctions.
-- It will be better than the ANA show in LA was, which isn't saying anything.
-- The economy still sucks and people will still be reluctant to spend even the parking and admission fees to get there.
-- Too many dealers will still price their merchandise with what seems to be the hell-bent objective of hauling them back home yet again.
-- Dealer table fees are still to the moon, so a few more of them who have set up in the past will stay home instead.
-- Truly "wowser" coins will still be few and far between, and will also be priced to the moon.
-- The majority of dealers' cases will still be filled with the same tired dreck that's been there for 12-18 months.
-- Viewing lots in the Heritage auction will uncover an occasional nugget.
-- At the end of the day I'll probably once again be disappointed I went to the hassle of attending, and the odds are better than 50-50 I'll go home empty-handed.

My thoughts exactly. The direction is clear. Otherwise, I tend to agree with Bear.

<< <i>I expect there'll be a lot of worry among both dealers and collectors if the next big show bombs like the ANA show did.

I don't know since when the dealers who felt the past ANA show was a "bomb" were assigned the role of blanket spokesman for the entire coin dealer industry, but there is a strong percentage of dealers, including myself, who had a successful ANA show earlier this month.
Anybody who did personally attend the ANA show have the right to their own opinions regarding the show, but those who were not in physical attendance should not draw conclusions about any perceived failure (or success) of the show merely based spoken word, rumors or secondary information.

as the amount of dollar business being transacted. If most of
the dealers did sort of ok, then that is probably the best that
should be expected given the economic environment in which
we find ourselves. Because the ANA show was not a resounding
triumph, it does not mean that it was a bomb. Perhaps something
in the middle, would be a more appropriate description.
