The missing coin is an 1873 Closed 3 $20 graded MS61 by NGC.........cert#324102-028.

My company is Lake Houston Coin and Bullion and I am located in the Houston/Humble Texas area.

  • I will keep my eyes opened.

Fedex is a good outfit but several years ago they would repeatedly leve very expensive stuff on my doorstep even though it had a bold sig required sticker on the package.

While I doubt we will see the coin out here in California I will email this thread to a few of the locals. Thanks for providing information sufficient to track it.

Fed Ex is great for many things but in my experience leaving packages at the front door is pretty routine for them, while sometimes not following the signature requirement. I would never send a coin via their service for this reason.

    Good luck.

There is a small show here in San Antonio on the 22nd of August. I'll try to watch for it.

Dropping the package at the door does not satify delevery requirmant if signature was required. Contact the sender and have them file a claim with FedEx for non delivery.
And sorry to say but one truck driver needs a new job.

    Sorry to hear that.

My URH was left on the doorstep--luckily it was not there long.

    1873 $20 Closed 3 NGC MS61 is a very tough coin. Only 5 graded finer all MS62.
  • I, on the other hand, have had good luck using them, I think it's a dice roll.

I agree with SilverHaze: Just thought this was the type of thread that needed a bump!
  • Thanks guys for the bump...............the reason the box was left was because the customer failed to mark the airbill properly to require a signature..........

This customer has sent numerous packages this way in the past and he knows that it must have a signature....and I make it a point to repeat this important requirement every single time regardless of how many packages have been sent by anyone to make sure we are all on the same page.....

Needless to say the insurance company has declined the lost shipment claim and the customer is not happy............what a week this has turned out to be but at least it is FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not to trivialize the fact that someone stole this coin, but it sounds like this customer has been cheap for a while, and now he may be paying a price for that.
Maybe a lesson learned....and not a cheap one at that.

Hope that the coin & culprits are found.

  • Unfortunate and expensive lesson for the customer. Hope things work out.

  • Tom, is there any chance that an employee picked up the package, set it aside and forgot about it. It happens. Double search your store real well. Every nook and cranny.

hopefully there is video nearby that might narrow the search by capturing the comings and goings following delivery. Video seems to be ubiquitous these days....

I visit several Gulf coast coin dealers regularly. I printed out your post and will keep it in my wallet. I will keep my eyes peeled for it.
  • Considering I LIVE in this area, check with the local pawn shops and the one coin dealer in town, and I'm sure you know who I'm referring to. I think though that I would start with the Fed Ex delivery boy and check his background out a bit. I have never had a Fed Ex package just 'left' on my doorstep, UPS- yes, PO like clockwork. Depending on what part of town you are in and the surrounding neighborhood- watch the kids- the little 'tykes' are a bit 'handy' at times.

Lake Houston Coin n Bullion huh! we might need to chat. your name looks familiar...

    Doesn't surprise me.

I used to work for a company that sold certified Diamonds.

We had a couple of instances when Fedex would leave a $20,000 diamond at the front door all day long. The customer freaked out when he came home to find his 'diamond' sitting there all day long, eventhough it was clearly marked as 'signature only'.

    Can you blame him?

Thankfully, the 'dropped off' packages were never stolen.
