You could be #2 on the Mets too, and your not getting in the Hall either

Around here, he is considered something that strongly resembles #2.

I think even with 300 he would not get in. I think the overall opinion of him is that low among voters.

If he gets to 300 he is an absolute in, but thats the only way he gets in.
I doubt Niekro is in without 300?

I like Moyer but I don't think he's got a prayer. He's had a very nice, very long career and he's a good person, as far as I know anyway.

One stat that stands out to me as one of the reasons he won't make it in is that he's given up more home runs in his career than every pitcher except Robin Roberts and if he keeps playing he's likely to pass RR in a year or two.

I'm a Phillies fan, but I don't think JM has much chance. He's a workhorse, with a long career, and a remarkable pitcher for hanging in there at his age, but his career just doesn't add up to HOF.
  • Sure, Jim Rice is in, Tony Perez, Bill Mazahoweveryouspellhisnameski is in, let's put everybody in. Dave Parker? Sure, why not? Moyer, hell yeah. In fact, let's wave the waiting period and put him in today. Put all ball players ever to play the game in. Even if ya didn't quite make the majors...sure, you get a plaque at Cooperstown! Maybe even I could get in...

But for reals....no. I am of the opinion The Hall is only for the all time greats. I am aware not everyone (including many voters) shares this view.

This used to be true but it isn't anymore. Cooperstown decided that there can't be a year where no one gets in, this has led to a bunch of borderline
players getting in and now the HOF isn't the best of the best of the best.

Moyer's stats are better than a guy currently in the Hall during a time when batting is king. He should be in.

    Kevin
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
Kevin, Moyer is not even borderline.

    Stop being such a homer.

Yes Moyer has had a great career. A workhorse and a decent guy to boot.

But and this is a BIG BUT if he wasn't a Phillie YOU would not even know he was alive let alone

    touting him for the Hall.

    Steve

    Good for you.
  • joestalinjoestalin Posts: 12,473 ✭✭
ignore the stats, Moyer was just average, he never got in a fight with someone on the mound, he never threw at anyones head, he never used drugs
or pimped his sister out, or had a few too many and ran over a few people, he just had a great career and put up numbers that match a few
guys already in the hall....oh ok, nevermind.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
    Moyer was just average,

Moyer should be a first ballot Hall of Famer - if not...i'm gonna demand an investigation.

  • << <i>he just had a great career and put up numbers that match a few

He had an average, at best ever so slightly above average, career for someone that pitched for over 20 seasons. His numbers match one or two guys in the HOF that pitched for 20+ seasons 60 years ago.

The highest he ever finished in Cy Young voting was 4th. That was in 2001 and he wasn't even the best pitcher on his team.

Finished in top 10 in majors for walks allowed 6 times. Top 5 four times.

Only made one All Star game.

    Never won a Gold Glove.

Back to Cy Young voting, 144 ACTIVE pitchers have received more votes in their careers than Moyer has and he has by far more seasons pitching than any other active pitcher with only a few exceptions.

Hall of Fame material? I don't think so. Hall of Good? Don't think so either. Hall of Average but was able to stay healthy and play forever? Yes.

I'd have it Gibson, Carlton, Seaver, Moyer...and a mortal lock to win a WS championship - LOL
  • joestalinjoestalin Posts: 12,473 ✭✭
wait, since when did the measuring stick of a pitcher getting in to the hall become Seaver and Carlton? Jim freaking Rice just got in, its obvious that the
standard has been drastically lowered. The Hall is only as great as the weakest player. Moyer will be a better pitcher than the bottom rung of the HOF,
you can't deny that. Sure you don't want to hang a plaque next to Spahn, but that isn't what the Hall is about anymore. If line snorting fatty Dave
Parker is in the conversation, then Moyer and his stats in the roid era, must be.

You all don't like the Phillies, thats cool, but the dude should be in! 250+ wins is just as good as 500 homers. You know it, I know it, and James knows it.

    Thanks

  • << <i>You all don't like the Phillies, thats cool, but the dude should be in! 250+ wins is just as good as 500 homers. >>

500 HR's by no means gets you in the hall, or 600 for that matter. How are you so sure that Moyer wasn't roided up? How do you know that no one has mentioned his name simply because he isn't a HOF lock?

...and just so you can read through it again:

He had an average, at best ever so slightly above average, career for someone that pitched for over 20 seasons. His numbers match one or two guys in the HOF that pitched for 20+ seasons 60 years ago.

<< <i>How are you so sure that Moyer wasn't roided up? >>

He is sure because he has a Phillies uni on. The Phillies don't take steroids, every Phillies player will be in the HOF, the Phillies don't sign free agents, and they never make mistakes.

If Moyer was on a different team, stalin would never have started this thread....case closed

Moyer's a HOF only if he goes in as Ranger.....

From one homer to another. Think Moyer plays in 2036 Kevin? If so he could have a Topps Heritage card that looks exactly like his rookie card. Guess he'd only have to play in 2035 to get the 2036 card....

    Lets see...

When I googled Jamie Moyer's name and checked to reputable websites I came up with Jamie Moyer's career highlights.

    * All-Star (2003)
    * World Series champion (2008)

WOW, Holy crap, that's Hall of Fame Material. LMAO at Kevin.

    and your point is?

wait wait, let me guess, he has no gold gloves.

    yeah ok
  • JackWESQJackWESQ Posts: 2,133 ✭✭✭
You can fluke a season. Heck, you probably could even fluke a career. But there's no way you can fluke 257 career wins, which admittedly, is due in large part to Moyer's longevity. That said, I get the sense that Hall of Fame voters do not look favorably on players who "pile" up stats by "hanging around." As much as I like Moyer, I don't believe any rational baseball fan can mention Moyer and dominance in the same sentence which, for me, is a "criteria" for the Hall of Fame.
