What US Mint collectors product had the highest sales?

Seeing almost 80,000 UHR being sold the $1200+/- or $100 million in sales raised this question........

What single collectors coin or product has record for highest total sales?

Not counting plain bullion dealer sales or coins released for general circulation.

Is it the 1986 1 oz. gold proof??

1986 446,290 minted at $550.00 selling price......... Appox. $250 million dollars

Not knowing or bothering to look up the answer, my guess would be the yearly Proof Set. So many "collectors" have a subscription for proof sets with the mint that they don't even bother to see what's for sale at the mint.

My wild guess...the 1984 Olympic $10 gold? ... combined sales around 500,000. I can't remember what the issue price was at that time for 1/2 oz of Gold Commem.

The Bicentennial BU set lists at 11,000,000 sets sold, but I doubt that figure. I was working for Coin World at the time, and somebody told me that in order to meet the striking deadline for the 15 million (Proof and Unc.) sets authorized, the Mint just ran the blanks for the last two or three million BU sets through high speed presses and dumped them into barrels to be remelted later.

Still, they sold about 8,000,000 units, or about 12 million counting the Proofs. Next highest is the Statue of Liberty halves and dollars, followed by the 1982 Washington half dollar.

    << <i>BU Bicentennial silver set. >>

Agree. The mint was selling these for years after the Bicentennial ended.

    $9.00
  • So unadjusted for inflation sales were in 100 million dollar range...........

It appears the 2009 UHR will be in to top 5 not adjusted for inflation.

And these, along with the 3pc. proof sets, sets hold the distinction of having the only 40% Ag quarters ever minted. Shame that so many were made . . . Maybe alot will get melted when silver hits $50/oz again ! ! ! image

Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!
  • So.....unadjusted for inflation is the 1986 1 oz. gold proof eagle the #1 all time dollar sales record holder for a single coin offered to collectors from US mint??

Were you asking for the highest sales in total dollar value, rather than in number of units sold? I did not get that from the thread title.
