How much are these Japanese gold coins worth???

Hi all, I found the following gold coins at my local coin store:

http://www.mint.go.jp/eng/data/commemorative/page15.html

http://www.mint.go.jp/eng/data/commemorative/page20.html

1990 Hirohito 100,000 yen gold coin and 1993 50,000 yen gold coin.

I could not find any previous ebay auctions to figure out what they are going for on ebay. Anyone have an idea? Does anyone know how much they sell for and are they highly desirable??

Thanks

Silvereagle, thanks for the reply. Have you seen these on ebay??? I couldn't find any on the completed listings and wondered if perhaps they were rare now.

I picked up the 1986 100,000 yen gold coin. Its composition is .64 oz gold and on ebay I saw one sell for 1100 BIN and one going for 875 with 1 day left and 12 bids. So I guess the 1986 is a good date to pick up.

    mkman123,

I don't follow these type coins therefore I can't help you. I doubt that they are "rare" and I would treat them as bullion .... gold value + 10-15% premium .... unless they are a very high grade MS69+ then they may command a higher premium.

Someone in the forum will come along and probably can offer better market advice than me.
  • There are only two modern Japanese ¥100,000 coins (although one was issued with two consecutive dates) and one ¥50,000 coin.

In each case, when issued their face values significantly exceeded their bullion value, but as the yen has climbed faster against the dollar than the bullion price increase of gold, two now have face values far, far exceeding their bullion value, and the other's bullion value only slightly exceeds its face value.

The 60th year enthronement of Hirohito commemorative, issued in Meiji 61/62 (1986/87) weighs in at 20g, roughly 2/3 oz AGW (~$632.00 vs. face of ~$1,054.00). The current Japanese Numismatic Dealers Assn. catalog values the 1986 version (mintage 10-million) at ¥140,000 (~$1,475.00), and the 1987 version (mintage 1-million) at ¥150,000 (~$1,580.00); but those "values" are definitely on the high side.

The enthronement of current Emperor Akihito commemorative, issued in Heisei 2 (1990) is basically 1 oz. AGW, (~$948.10 vs. face of ~$1,054.00) with a mintage of 2-million and a catalog value of ¥150,000, also on the high side.

The Crown Prince Wedding commemorative dated Heisei 5 (1993), at approximately 6/10 oz. AGW (~$569.00 vs. face of ~$527.00) also had a 2-million mintage, and is cataloged at ¥75,000 (~$790), which is probably the most accurate value for any of the three, although still somewhat high.

None of them appear very often on eBay, perhaps in part because they aren't worth what was paid for them around original issue time. They are, after all, essentially bullion coins despite their beauty.

  • Around Honolulu these coins have the reputation for being heavily counterfeited, so be careful. I have heard through the grapevine that Tokyo banks won't accept the 100k yen for deposit unless accompanied by the original cert/packaging, but you know how that grapevine can be. I do have friends who have sold these for foreign exchange though, and I think the 100k's for under 90% of face is a steal, as long as you're not planning to try to resell them quickly.

I have a 1999 15th Anniversary in original plastic if you want to be sure you get REAL one for $800.

    .64 AGW mintage 200,000 Y#124 in Krause Value $1200

    10,000 yen

    Or a PCGC PF-69 for $950

    Story on the NEW issue.

I hadn't heard that, but it is very believable. A few years ago I wanted to deposit an accumulation of old currency and coin, and my bank sent everything more than 10 years old to Tokyo for validation before giving me credit.
