Help! Is this Trade dollar genuine?

I don't know anything about trade dollars except they are often faked. Can you tell by the picture if this in genuine?

No, that thing is a counterfeit. The seller shot the picture at an angle to confuse the issue with the dentiles, which are way off on the obverse. Of late I’ve seen some Chinese pieces that have been buffed up and cleaned to hide the defects in their counterfeiting process.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • Fake
  • Not an expert but the obverse looks bogus to me.

Thanks guys. I figured as much. Bought it in a lot but assumed it was fake so I haven't lost anything.

I believe it is genuine. But the obverse is heavily polished (ex-jewelry).

Quick glance tells me fake (saw more than a few when I was in China months ago)

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I've yet to see that type of older golden brown reverse toning on a counterfeit/fake.

You may be on to something there.

I cannot tell from those pictures, but am suspicious.

As someone said above, and as I have reported elsewhere, the Chinese thieves are not intentionally degrading the coins to make them easier to pass. They may receive less money for them, but with production costs so cheap $50 or $100 is still an obscene profit.

I can't tell from the photos either, but what I'm seeing with the dentils and wheat sheaf makes me suspicious-- at the very least, it has been heavily polished/cleaned. The color may be more of a white balance issue with the camera, than real toning. Even if genuine, I think it would prove to be a hideous example in hand.

    So the responses are:

    Fake and messed with
    Fake and not messed with
    Real and messed with

All we are missing is real and not messed with, so that one can be ruled out.

Always concider the source. Ask if any of the people who dimed in are well versed dealers or specialist in trade dollars and listen to those people. Chalk the rest up to people don't know what they are talking about.

Uneven wear throughout, which leads me to believe it is a fake ran through a tumbler to induce a circulated look.

Here is a link to a genuine coin 1875 -cc

My gut says it is real, but without any option to view it in hand then I would pass in a heart beat. Coin isn't attractive and has been polished severely on the obverse. If you bought our own it then I would take to a knowledgeable person for an in hand opinion. Or ask for a refund and find a better coin that is slabbed in the future. Buying raw trades without knowledge of the series is a big mistake.

Have you weighed it, or tested it to see if its silver yet?
