Just got back from my unopened box excursion.....

I'm gonna take care of a few things here at the house and then I'll be back with a full trip report and pictures of my haul. That will be followed by a live rip or two. My scanner here at home is broken as I always do my scanning at work so I'll have to take close pictures of them and upload to my photobucket but it will be fun. Stay tuned.

At supper my daughter spilled marinara all over herself and laughed and the spaghetti and meatballs I had was fantastic. It wasn't $46.98 fantastic but it was good none the less. I told my wife I was about to buy $10,000 worth of stuff from the guy and she first laughed and then said "really?". I laughed and then said "no, not really", but maybe half of that, lol.
My wife and daughter went to walk around and shop at other stores and I told them to meet me at the car in about 30 minutes. That would give me time to haggle with the guy and burn down his shop is needed. I told her to pull the car to the back of the store if she saw smoke coming from that direction.
When I got back he quoted something ridiculous for all of it, but I anticipated that and actually had a figure in mind with prices from BBCE and ebay on hand to counter his reasoning. Well, he would simply not budge on any of the really high end stuff. He still had the '72 GAI 8.5 box and still had it priced at $4000. He told me he'd take $3200 for it, but I said I couldn't go above $2400 without knowing what series it was from. We haggled back and forth over the other stuff for several minutes. Finally, I offered him $4200 for the '72 box, the '80-'81 Basketball box (which he quoted by itself for $1100), a 1952 Bowman Mantle graded SGC 60 (which was a beautiful well centered example that he had priced for $1495), and a 1980 Topps Baseball wax box that he had priced at $350. I even pulled the old - counting out 42 crisp bills and putting on the counter trick, but he wasnt going for it. He countered with $5000 which is still not out of line, but I politely declined.
Oddly enough, what I did end up buying because I got the best deal on it and because I haven't ripped any football since I was a kid, was 3 older football boxes.
First up '83 Topps
Next '80 Topps
and finally, one that I really wanted, '78 Topps
All three of the boxes are in good shape and the pack look really good.
I think I'm gonna sit here tonight and rip the absolute sh*t out of all 3 of them. Up first '83 Topps. The pics will take a little time because, like I said, I don't have a working scanner here.
<< <i>1972 is only one series >>
got the images fixed. 1972 Topps Baseball is what I meant.
Thats one you should go back and find out.
5th PETE ROSE!!!!! 6th are killer boxes!!
<< <i>Ah, those are easy to tell. Just turn one of the packs over and you can see right through them.

It's encapsulated by GAI (8.5). That was the problem we had last time. Felicia offered to go in with me on the box and even called Steve Hart with some questions about it but he would not allow us to bust it out of the GAI box and send it to BBCE for inspection. GAI did not label the series and its impossible to tell from the box itself.

Tommy cant turn over a pack the box is sealed in a GAI holder.
but wouldnt be surprises if the old man scammed you for 5 bills even
<< <i>i will set the over under on what you paid for the 3 boxes at.... $440.00

I gave $400 and felt like I got a good deal since the '78 box is worth more than that.
Up next, '78 Topps.

<< <i>Great cards. 80 Football is a design. Very underrated. >>
yeah, I think so too. If the Lester Hayes isn't a 10 then I just don't know what a 10 is
Thanks,

1985 Topps Football (starting in psa 8) - #9 - started 05/21/06
<< <i>keep ripping. nice job. i think the hayes t/b centering will cause it not to 10.
yeah, I couldn't take pictures directly above the cards because the flash kept causing a big glare. The centering is dead on.
<< <i>Thought this was a live rip, not a play by play. Where the heck are all the scans!?!?!? >>
page 1 brother. I don't have a working scanner here so I have to wait until the end and then take pictures. I will scan them at work on Monday. So, I guess it's semi-live, lol.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
<< <i>Hayes has an outside shot at a 10, but will most likely grade a 9, IMO.. >>
good guess, since there is ONLY 1 in the history of Lester Hayes Rookies, lol. It has a shot at a 10 and may get one doing the resub game. 23 packs into the '78's. Got 2 Tarkenton's, 2 Bradshaw's, 3 Dorsetts in total, a couple of Staubachs, Fouts, etc...All are sharp but centering won't allow 10's.

<< <i>Would love to discuss a trade for your worst Dorsett >>
I've only gotten 1 regular issue Dorsett so far (9 packs left). I'll put up a pic of it when I'm done.
good guess, since there is ONLY 1 in the history of Lester Hayes Rookies, lol.
Even more reason why it will top at a 9 (centering T/B is the main reason, IMO). You might be resubbing that one till kingdom come, LOL...but best of luck if you do..

I may just tell them to keep the Hayes out there and just charge my credit card $10/month until it becomes a 10. I looked and its now a pop 2 anyway. 6 or 7 of the best ones I have picked out of the '80's Topps are 0 pop right now. The Ken Anderson is a 0 pop in the '78's and most of the other best ones are 1-3 pop. Even if I get all 5's it's fun to rip old sh*t every now and then.

I made great money on a PSA 11 a while back.
Only an idiot would have a message board signature.
He has an '80 Topps Football rack box that I'll probably get on my next trip to see him. I told him if he'd get his heart right I'd buy the '80-'81 Basketball, '72 Baseball, and '72-'73 Basketball. He just laughed. He asked me if I was ripping this old stuff and when I told him yes, he almost had a heart attack. "Why would you do that when you are such a young man and this stuff is just gonna go up in value if you leave it unopened?"
I told him because I can make more money, but I can't get the same rush by leaving it unopened. Besides, even if it does go up in value, what the hell am I gonna do with a few more hundred or possibley thousands of dollars when I'm old anyway? By that time, turning stuff for profit will be the last thing on my mind.
I agree. RIP RIP RIP!!!!!
