Does the value of Vintage (Pre 1970) increase with all the steroid alligations?

Sure seems like it would add validity to the numbers of the players that did it honest; not that there was ever any significant value to modern material in the first place. What happens to all the high $ modern cards of the A-Rods, Roger Clemens, Chipper Jones, David Ortiz, Greg Maddux, Barry Bonds etc.?

What? Did he just gain 30 pounds over his career because he plays a lot of golf and drinks good wine? image
  • This douchebag always throws Maddux's name in.

NOW, Back to the original question please . . .
  • No..........Why would you even put Chipper Jones or Greg Maddux in that list of players
A collector of all things Braves
Always looking for Chipper Jones cards.
Im a very focused collector of cards from 1909 - 2012...LOL
  • Your "evidence" that Maddux used roids is that he gained 30 pounds over the course of 22 years? Maddux was 21 when he debuted for the Cubs. He gains a little over a pound a year for 22 years and that makes it obvious that he used? What douchebaggery.
  • itzagoneritzagoner Posts: 8,753 ✭✭
i think the answers are all pretty clear, take a look at who people speak about with reverence around here.

you can make all the assumptions you want, certain guys will represent to us what the game is all about......desire, determination, talent, accomplishment......until someone knocks any of 'em off the pedestal, we will continue to believe, ok? image
  • 1960toppsguy1960toppsguy Posts: 1,127 ✭✭
Chipper was a stick man when he came up, follown the career and the horseshoe that the numbers lead you to and it becomes quite obvious. It's OK to be in denial, it's happened to some of my favorites as well.image

theorizing in your way demands that we believe Tony Gwynn got that big without cheeseburgers.

    heh heh.

Please define "douchebaggery" as it pertains to Websters International Dictionary?
  • Chipper was a stick figure when drafted because he was still a child. I have lost about 20 punds in the last 2 years and still weigh about 30 pounds more than I did when I graduated from high school.

BTW, Chipper only weighs about 190 and is 6' 3" which is average weight for his height for a healthy athlete.

PED do not increase the waistline, they increase all areas in proportion. He was just a great, fat guy who could hit, kinda like Kruk or Ruth.
  • itzagoneritzagoner Posts: 8,753 ✭✭
i just looked at all my 50's and 60's and early 70's stuff and determined that most of these guys were on some kind of pain meds or perhaps a stimulant to keep them going during those long, hot summer months.....i'm not prepared to make accusations or present my findings to Congress, but you guys can have all my cards.

    i'm ashamed. image

DUDE, I'm not asking you to sell your "Chipper" collection . . . Hold on to it for another year . . . then sell on the news.
  • Hank Aaron and Mickey Mantle were both on roids. They both gained over 40 pounds over the course of their careers.
  • itzagoneritzagoner Posts: 8,753 ✭✭
and i believe Lou Brock had some of his heavier organs removed so he could run faster.
  • 1960toppsguy1960toppsguy Posts: 1,127 ✭✭
Aaron came to the Majors @ 175 lbs. and finished his career at the same weight as did Mantle, Mays, Koufax etc. I don't recall any of them having any serious personality disorders either. I think Mr. Jones did about 6-8 years ago and he was often hampered by injuries after that. Do some homework and the write your post.
  • itzagoneritzagoner Posts: 8,753 ✭✭
Aaron also gained an unfair advantage by learning the game while hitting a pop cap with a broomstick, and then graduated to a bat and ball at the expense of his properly trained peers.

you do realize this will never end, right? image

Some of our forum users just want to be heard. 1960's, we have heard what you have to say.

The answer to your poorly asked question is a resounding NO! There are no cards that will be going up in this market due to a recession.

Your tireless beating of the "Maddux on roids" drum is becoming a little dull. If you still want to be heard and have someone pay some you attention to you, I would suggest another avenue. How about going on the vintage board and start mouthing off about Mantle being overrated or some other 'stupidly' thought out quote. But for the love of 88 Donruss, will you leave Maddux alone for awhile?

BTW, allegation would be the correct spelling, in this case.

is a claim of a fact by a party in a pleading, which the party claims to be able to prove. Allegations remain assertions without proof, until they can be proved.

    pfffft.
  • Mantle was 4 inches shorter and 20 pounds heavier than Chipper. Mantle must have been roided up.

dude hit a ball 565 feet.

    sweet spot?

  • Aaron was 150 when drafted and 180 when he retired. Do your own research before posting.
  • Sure did not help Maddux throw any harder.

Don't get me wrong, I like Maddux alot, I was also a Clemens fan and he was thought to be a naturalist by every person on earth which was evidenced by his respect and dedication for the game and his family alike. Lets wait for the evidence before we decide for sure . . . that would be a fair assesment of this.

Hell, I've gained over 50 pounds in 22 years...I'm not on roids. Maddux and Jones should stay off the list until outed...isn't there something about innocent until proven guilty?
  • thunderdanthunderdan Posts: 3,036 ✭✭✭
Have you looked at Maddux's velocity over time? It's gone way, way down. He was only able to stay in the majors due to placement. Nothing about the guy's physique screams HGH or otherwise. Are you kidding?

I doubt the pre era will increase just based on collectors shifting their focus because of steroids.
The drive behind modern stuff won't change, it has a niche that always bring that current collecting/pack ripping experience.

No way did Aaron use steroids, but the guy had to have weighed more than 180 lbs. when he retired. I remember him playing out the string for the Brewers, and he had a pretty big beer gut going.
