A TTMer's rant...

Sorry if this sounds like whining but Im a little P.O.'ed right now.
So I send Joe Garagiola a 1952 Topps card and 10 bucks to sign it. Yesterday I get back a 1954 Archives signed instead of my 1952 Topps. First, Im thinking he mixed up the cards with someone else. Then, talking to another person who does 1952's autographed (yes, we know who he is), I find out that Garagiola did the same thing to him! Apparently Garagiola keeps any 1952 Topps sent to him and returns a CRAP card!
Now, to me this is STEALING. He charges for his signature through the mail so Im not asking something for nothing.
Should I just let this go and never send another 52 Topps? Should I write a letter asking him to return my card even if unsigned?
Are atheletes, current or retired ENTITLED to keep items sent to them? I know I know...never send anything you are not willing to lose. Thats not my point here. I can understand not sending something back if SASE was not enclosed. I just dont understand this type of entitlement I guess.
Ok, thats my rant...I feel better now

Others will disagree, but you are paying for a service in this regard.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
<< <i>If charging a fee and there is no disclaimer that any 1952 Topps card sent to him will be kept and replaced, I too consider it stealing.

I agree as well. That is really lame.

Was the card in good shape? Kind of cheesy!
You could contact him but since you sent it to him - and he didn't request it - he could claim it now belongs to him? I thought there was something in postal law/regulation about receiving unwanted/unrequested items in the mail?

I would send him back a letter w/ the '54 archives card and voice your displeasure.
No threats or profanity, just a nice letter stating you are not satisfied.

Thanks for the input everyone...I think I'll do that...I'll send him back the archives card and request my 52 back.
a bunch of 1954 Archives and have someone else open your letters and mail them back to you.
That person maybe the one taking them.
Only a thought.

That is a good start.
......
His keeping of the card is actionable, if he has held himself out - or knowingly
allowed others to hold him out - publicly as a TTM-signer for fees/donations.
Clearly, he has done so.
In the event that he were to have "lost" your card, his substitution of the "lost"
card with one of his generic cards would likely be the best remedy you could
expect.
Cards like the one he sent you often retail in the $40 range. They can usually
be had for less, on EBAY.

Personally, I don't like the guy and would not give 5-cents for his sig.
His arrogant codgerism is seen as charming by some folks; not by me.
<< <i>Barry, you need to sign him up at mailpoop.com. Somebody here once posted the link. Check it out

I heard Lance Moran of Sioux Falls, SD is a real popular guy.
I got an email today from Garagiola's "handler". Stating that they must have sent the card to the wrong person. After he chews my ass out for being insensitive LOL, he then states that Mr Garagiola is willing to replace my 52 Topps with a signed 52 Bowman. (Im sure it will be beat to hell too)
Hmmmm...so let me get this right...you dont believe you owe me anything but are willing to replace my vintage card with a much less expensive vintage card. What kind of stash have you kept, Mr Handler? I asked for my card back (or monetary replacement which I asked 30.00 for) and my 10.00 signing fee. That was refused.
My guess is that Joe Garagiola doesnt even know this has happened and that his handler is stealing from TTMers. I am now wondering if I should let this go or if I should let in to this handler. Im sure that Garagiola gets his share of requests but I highly doubt he has so much coming in that there are so many mix ups.

Now THAT wouldn't surprise me. If it's true, that dude is a total scumbag.

That is exactly what I did. I sent a letter with another sase, returning the archives card. I asked for my card back (or monetary reimbursement) plus my 10.00 sig fee.
This was my follow up by Garagiola's "handler".
He's handling alright...cards right in his collection.

On another note, Peyton Manning signs TTM?

Handler said I was insensitive for insinuating that someone is stealing the more valuable cards. Because Joe is gracious enough to sign even while ill. The handler is a first class a-hole.
Yeah, Manning will sometimes sign one item.
collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.
looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started
It's possible that the person opening his mail stole the card... A lot of players have people helping them w/ the mail and it would be awful easy for them to steal money and/or cards with impunity.
