Dead Horse... US MINT Silver Proof Set Quality

So, got my requisite two silver proof sets- Man what a disappointment- I do believe that I got the only lincoln set that would grade genuine... It has a scrape on one of them... My wife said Wow what a gash.... when my wife says that it is bad... This is ridiculous. These sets were $55.00 + this sh*t is absurd....

I got my set the other day. No quality problems.

But it is a boring set of coins for $55.
  • Mine overall looked fairly well other than the NA $ with a few brown spots but I wasn't expecting a perfect set either. If it bothers you that much just send them back.
  • Yeah the presidential dollars have brown spots and one of the lincolns of the second set has spots.. like it was rinsed... just absurd- You know I have ever proof set since 1950 so I try to keep the set going... but with quality like this it is ridiculous.... I do not know.... I will be returning one of the sets for sure.

.......one more thing, john. when you send them back give them a call and tell them that you want reimbursed for shipping them BACK. i did and they told me to send a copy of the receipt and they would take care of it (AS THEY SHOULD!) and they did. it really is unacceptable quality control.

  • Will do. Thank you for that tidbit-

On a side note- The Kennedy in both sets is Absolutely hammered gorgeous- WOW... HAMMERED... love that one.. but it does not outweigh the rest.

    not a dead horse.

    hmmmmm

not only are there "rinse spots" as they are currently nicknamed, there are spots on the cents that look like a dried lake bed. On either side of Lincoln's bust look like there was evidence of a once pooled liquid which has left a bathtub riing behind..

Then there are the dollars, not only the Sac, but the presidential dollars also. Same looking rinse spots(?), but one huge spot crossed over the body and past the arm of the statue of Liberty.

Also, there were some noticable to the naked eye scratches, as well.

and, needless to say, they showed up on the regular proof sets, too.

As for the fish scale proof, I once had no opinion. Now I have an opinion. The fish scales have very noticeable fish scale stripes on the coin. weird and weird looking.

If anyone is near Philadelphia, stop in at the Mint's gift shop, they have the Silver Proof sets available now, bought mine yesterday. One of the things that the employees there always do is open the set up for you to view all the coins before you commit to buying it. Good idea.
  • Sent my 1 set back yesterday. the Lincoln log cabin coin looked like it still needed to be rinsed, the Formative cent had a large carbon spot on the obverse, and the Kennedy Half had a large scratch coming from the lip extending into the facial side. I faxed the shipping costs to the mint and they are going to reimburse me the return shipping costs.
  • IMO the mint dropped the ball on the Lincoln's this year.
Here is my spotted lincoln from the silver proof set.

I buy my Proof sets from a local dealer now. I don't order them from the mint any more. He lets me go though his sets and pick and choose the best I can find from them.

He had five silver sets yesterday. A few coins had marks on them; some had shiny spots on heads of the frosted quarters. And the die polishing on the heads of the quarters is kind of odd. Still it's much better to chose from group than to play “mint roulette.” In recent years the roulette ball from the mint has dropped into “00” more times than I thought it should have.

I'm a collector now, and I'm not looking for stuff that can be sent in to get a PR-70. But dang! when it says "Proof" and they are charging $55 for it, you expect better than this.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • I had to send my set back as well. The Kennedy half had contact marks and the box was pretty well beat up when I received it.

I got my two sets last weeks and they are perfect! I was really impressed after hearing so many stories about the cents and spots. Sorry to hear you got a bum batch. Send them back.

If each of lens of coins is considered a leg, then at least two legs have been broken in the sets I've received. Instead of shooting the horse I sent him back to the Mint to see what pony they'll send next.

    Schatzy, that's really sad.
I ordered one for an annual gift my wife gives to a family member and it has beautiful cameo pieces in it.

I would have been very distressed if I had opened that set up and seen this.

I received my sets...and after going through them meticulously, I find no faults.... beautiful sets. Perhaps the luck of the draw - Cheers, RickO
