Those are very nice "discovery piece" coins but I have a question.
What is the determining factor and who determins as to
what is a discovery piece??
I have been going through change, collections and coins for sale
since I was a paperboy 45 years ago and have found a few things
that I thought different about some coins that I put back. Things like
extra metal on mint marks and dates along with just strange looking
surfaces. If I wanted to get these looked at to see if I have a discovery piece
just what do I need to do??
Thanks
Tiny
Here's #2, which I just got back (1923-S VAM-1BB):
1880-S VAM-90 is #3- it's in a PCGS slab now, but I'm going to have to crack it out to get it certified as the discovery...

The pictures are odd because I somehow lost the picture I took of the reverse when the coin was raw.
I once owned the discovery specimen of the 1806 C-2 (small 6, stems) half cent. That one was the discovery piece for the variety which dated back to the 1880s. It too was once the finest known, but some Bozo cleaned it before I owned it. When I owned it had been skillfully recolored, but of course it had no claims to finest known. Post owners included Brobston and Leland Rogers. I sold it when I was breaking up my half cent die variety collection.
<< <i>man raybob, you've got quite a bit of discoveries. Congrats on that! >>
Thanks. They are almost all 1921s... a couple were two-fers (credited with discovery of the base VAM and the supplemental VAM) and one was a three-fer. I spend a lot of time on the 1921s for a couple reasons. One is the challenge (I've got a thing for scribbles VAMs) and the other is that I can pick them up really cheap. Almost every one of those pictured discoveries came out of a jeweler's junk/melt bucket and cost $16 or less. The 21P VAM 87 was an NGC slabed (64) I picked on ebay for about $28. All the rest were rescued from the smelter.
Since they can't give more than 1 coin the "Discovery" designation,...one was designated the "Vaile Example"
and the other got designated the "Ezerman Example".
Happy Hunting!
