While building my Merc Variety set I found this one. Which is listed as 1939 10c DDO-003, 3-O-VI. I was going through all the dimes I had to see if I owned any of the varieties in the Cherrypickers' Guide. I did manage to find a few, and then I found this one. It resides in a PCGS holder MS64FB. I have a nice letter from Dr. James Wiles of Coneca. I would suggest the Mercury Dime series if you are trying to come up with a discovery coin. I have a feeling there are many unknown Double Dies, RPMs, and OMM just waiting to be discovered. If I could find one in searching my own coins, I am pretty sure there are many more.

I'm credited by John Wexler as having "discovered" the second known fully separated mintmark on 1956-D cents, which he listed as RPM#18 (RPM#8 being the first). In reality, others had submitted the variety before but mine was the first in an early enough die state to confirm the attribution. I pulled four of them from an OBW, I sold three to John immediately and still have the fourth.

Here's one Dr. Wiles listed for me a couple months ago. I haven't had a chance to send it in for the Discovery label yet.

This coin was discovered by me. It has a misplaced digit in the middle of the shield on the obverse. I dubbed it the Crescent Moon variety, as that what it resembles. So far to date I have the only 2 known out of a mintage of 7.2 million pieces. I will update this when I find a close up of the error on my hard disk.

  • Those are very nice "discovery piece" coins but I have a question.

What is the determining factor and who determins as to
    what is a discovery piece??

I have been going through change, collections and coins for sale
since I was a paperboy 45 years ago and have found a few things
that I thought different about some coins that I put back. Things like
extra metal on mint marks and dates along with just strange looking
surfaces. If I wanted to get these looked at to see if I have a discovery piece
just what do I need to do??

    Thanks

I have made 3 VAM discoveries. Here's what I did with the first one, 1923 VAM-1BC (and with the other 2 soon):

    Here's #2, which I just got back (1923-S VAM-1BB):

1880-S VAM-90 is #3- it's in a PCGS slab now, but I'm going to have to crack it out to get it certified as the discovery...

This is the only discovery coin I have in my collection. It is an 1800 Bolender-20. At the time that Bolender first published his die variety book in 1950, this was only example of this variety to he had traced. This is the plate coin from the book, and it's still tied for the finest known of the variety.

The pictures are odd because I somehow lost the picture I took of the reverse when the coin was raw.

I once owned the discovery specimen of the 1806 C-2 (small 6, stems) half cent. That one was the discovery piece for the variety which dated back to the 1880s. It too was once the finest known, but some Bozo cleaned it before I owned it. When I owned it had been skillfully recolored, but of course it had no claims to finest known. Post owners included Brobston and Leland Rogers. I sold it when I was breaking up my half cent die variety collection.

I had several back in the day, when Del Romines was doing attributions for CONECA. Even got my name in Wexler's Jefferson Nickel book in a couple places. Fun stuff.

<< <i>man raybob, you've got quite a bit of discoveries. Congrats on that! >>

Thanks. They are almost all 1921s... a couple were two-fers (credited with discovery of the base VAM and the supplemental VAM) and one was a three-fer. I spend a lot of time on the 1921s for a couple reasons. One is the challenge (I've got a thing for scribbles VAMs) and the other is that I can pick them up really cheap. Almost every one of those pictured discoveries came out of a jeweler's junk/melt bucket and cost $16 or less. The 21P VAM 87 was an NGC slabed (64) I picked on ebay for about $28. All the rest were rescued from the smelter.

Rob Ezerman and I each "Discovered" one of these DDO-004's (from the same die pair) while doing some 72-D research.
Since they can't give more than 1 coin the "Discovery" designation,...one was designated the "Vaile Example"
and the other got designated the "Ezerman Example".
