Here is an image of part of a coin. What type of coin, date, and Mint is it? You should have everything you need.

but that area has me scratching my head as it looks as if it could have been whizzed or cleaned

I'm not sure if you can tell, but the second image is a normal 1929-S which the motto is thinner (normal).

Sorry, but I don't see any doubling either. Just a lot of circ hits everywhere on a circulated Merc.

As you said it looks like a 1929-S DDO with the date doubled along with "In God We Trust". It looks to be an AU55.
