I mailed a Double Eagle in plain white envelope today.

  • <<We should know something by Friday, I would think....maybe tomorrow. BTW, I used a small piece of white duck tape to paste the raw coin (no holder) to an ordinary piece of paper, and then used 4 more pieces of paper to thicken it a little...that's it. Remember this was a jewelry piece and is just bullion.>>

Some newbie dealer mailed me an unc quarter in a raw safe-t-mailer. Turned out it was a pristine proof and it is now tarnished where it touched the safe-t-mailer. Oh well, I only paid bullion price for it.

I always wonder how many mint and proof sets would be delivered today if the U.S Mint
still mailed them like they did in the 50's...

Pic borrowed from coppercolor from the BST...

Lucky is all I say, and a fool to take such a chance. IMO
Not sure if I believe you anyway

Remind me again...What benefit do I have from fabricating a story like this?

Nah. Why, is it that unbelievable that I'd mail a $1,000 coin like that? Not one that I was selling, but a coin that is still mine?

Do you expect our admiration because you played Russian roulette and didn't lose?image

    Ditto!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

I wasn't looking for admiration, really. And I don't think it was Russian roulette either...I think it's just as safe as any other method of transport, if you trust your receiving end. I guess that was my point.

It's not Russian roulette because the consequences of losing are acceptable. If you go through life calculating odds and playing the right side of them then you will come out ahead, that's just plain arithmetic.

In this case he spent $.61 and registered mail would have been about $15.70 IIRC. so he saved $15 and gambled $1200. $1200/15 = 80 so if they lose less than one in 80, the OP comes out ahead and I'm pretty sure they lose much less than that.

I know many of you aren't comfortable living life like this and it's worth the $15 to sleep well. I'm not trying to change your mind. Additionally, as a seller I have to think about what the buyer thinks of me. If he thinks I'm a cheap ba$tard instead of a shrewd mathematician, then I lose. If he tries to scam me when I have no proof of delivery, then I lose. But in the conditions described in the op, he shipped it the mathematically correct way. --Jerry
