An old friend came by the other day to ask about a few gold coins he had....

So out of the Blue and old family friend calls me up to ask if I can take a look at a few old gold coins he has had for eons to see if any of them are 'worth anything'. Im sure we have all been in that position before, and certainly this type of a situation is worth exploration. A little while later he shows up here at my workshop, and shows me 2 indian quarter eagles, and indian half eagle, an 'elvis special' bracelet with four more gold coins in it (2.50 and 5. liberty)......

All common dates, in not that great of a condition, took him over to the computer and reeled off a bunch of raw completed ebay auctions to give him an idea what they would sell for (without involving the shysters with the envelope of the guy in the mall). After awhile of shooting the S*** and me showing him an ms67 Saint (to give him an idea what a REAL gold coin looks likeimage ), it was time for him to go on his merry way.

But I thought it would be neat to show him the semi-deserted upper floors of this 150 year old building...and DAMN if he dosent drop the little tiny box with the 3 gold coins...on the 12 inch wide board plank floor (with spaces between the planks, of course). There were two of them laying right there, but one was missing. The $5 half eagle was no where to be found. Did it manage to fall and quickly get down into the floor?

Its been hot HOT here, and its at least 100 degrees up there. We pulled a few boards up, revealing the concrete ceiling of the room below, but no coin. Got out my trusty rusty dusty metal detector....and didnt pick up anything (but kept getting one loud beep but I went through that little pile of rubbish over and over). Finally, he gives up, goes home kind of taking it all in stride.

today, I needed my flashlight for something here, went back upstairs and got it and thought >>>>Wouldnt it be something if I looked just one more time, and there would be the coin sitting in plain sight? And, you guessed it, there in that little pile of rubbish under the floorboard...there was a 1910 half eagle!

Whew!

Very interesting story. When I got to this point of the story the fairy tale in my mind kicked in that you'd pull up a few boards and find a bunch of old coins! image

One time years ago, while working in Philly with my dad, we were ripping apart an old brick building that had seen a big fire off of South St, lots of demo and dust! image We were checking the main walls and he was on a ladder just going over stuff. He told me to grab a bucket and get over there asap... He was removing ash and dust like there was no tomorrow, then put something in the bucket. I couldnt really make out what it was, but he knew what he found.

It was an old gun. The handle, which was at one time wood, it was gone probably from the fire. The cool thing was, it had four small barrels. It had to have been in there for decades.

I think he still has it.
