1977 Lincoln..Circulated..White Metal.....?

A Friend brought this in today, it dose not appear to be plated IMO, I weighed it on a diamond scale.....49.40 gr = 3.20107 g, the appearance is more Nickel looking then Silver....opinions?

According to the Red Book the weight should be 3.11 grams. I suspect it's plated.

    Plated
  • If it was plated, wouldn't those deep nicks reveal a copper color? What's the thickness of the coin?

You are going on the assumption that it was plated prior to the PMD.

True. If that was the case though it would be due to experimenting or boredom. It would just seem strange that someone would go through the process of plating a well circulated '77 Lincoln for a gift or something along those lines.

The plating shop ran out of test coupons, so they used a few circulating copper cents.

Probably mercury 'rubbed'... we did that as kids.... just take a blob of mercury and rub it all over the penny... comes our shiny silver. Cheers, RickO

I had one of these years ago and it was a 77. Why this date?
  • This is really weird.....I just got one dated 1967 in Atlantic City today....Well circulated and the newly abraded areas are silver colored as well...image
