If you knew the price was wrong - whether it be Walmart or the local card shop - stealing is stealing.
I don't know you John and I can't make any kind of true assessment of who you are from this mistake in judgement - but I do think many are not interested in what you pull at this point.
<< <i>To the OP, basically that was theft. However, even if you choose to be honest this board will STILL jump all over you, as evidenced by my recent ebay foul up. So dont lose too much sleep over what the forumites think of you. >>
I wouldn't go so far as to call it theft, unless he went back to try and get more at that price. The question I keep coming back to, and this has been explored in some of the examples here, is was the store clerk reprimanded for the error. Hopefully (and probably) not. But I don't think the damage to end user is the issue to many board members, it's making the choice between right and wrong, fair and unfair. Although, in many customs, this behavior would have been viewed as honorable, including in many middle eastern countries, where both buyer and seller beware.
Another question, why the hell is Wal-Mart selling +$100 cards in this economy? That's a family of 4's meals for a week in many households.
Kiss me once, shame on you. Kiss me twice.....let's party.
"Wow, I'm more interested in the Wal-Mart Evil Empire than the card fiasco. So what exactly is Wal-Mart doing that is shady?"

My initial impression of your post was that you were really excited about your good fortune, ... and you probably thought that most of the board members would be excited as well; especially to perhaps witness the rip!
If you're a karma kind of guy, or maybe just a little religious, you might want to contemplate the following:
1) If you do a video rip .... be sure not to tell your Walmart story!
2) If your conscience catches up with you .... pray for forgiveness!
3) If you get a speeding ticket or some other unexpected financial woe in the next day or so .... don't ask "why me?"!
4) If your son ever emulates what you did at Walmart .... try not to say "that's my boy!"!
It's easy for everyone to tell you that you did wrong, but I'm sure there are many that wish it happened to them
Don't think for a second that there's a Walmart anywhere within the reading areas of this post that hasn't already been hit!
Personally, I believe in karma .... "what goes around, comes around". I find it easier to live life honestly, rather than to wrestle with my conscience over dishonest deeds.
I'm not going to pass judgment to anyone on a message board since it's real easy to sit at home and say the right things that makes one self feel good.
I guess to the OP do whatever you are comfortable doing - I for one am not going to cry for Wal-Marts loss. Personally I can see the differance between a Wal-Mart screw up and some mom and pop card store.
Even though what happened was probably not right, I can't feel too bad about it simply because it happened to Wal-Mart. I seriously doubt they will feel the sting from this purchase.
<< <i>...to say nothing for Wal-Mart's own unethical business practices...ie knowingly hiring illegal aliens Personally I refuse to step foot in one of those stores, I'll roll to Meijer if I need to do some 'superstore' shopping. >>
I know for a fact that this is not true. I am a superintendant for a general contractor that does work for WalMart. I am required by WalMart to verify paperwork to assure that everyone working on my jobsite in leagl. The story that the media made the big deal about a few years ago about WalMart having illegals working for them was not true. The illegals worked for a contractor that a WalMart store manager had hired. As soon as it was found out WalMart blackballed the contractor. Shortly after that is when they started requiring us to verify everyone on the jobs. BTW, I hate WalMart as much as you guys do but a lot of the stories you hear are not entirely true. James
"Stealing is stealing - holding Walmart responsible or justifying stealing doesn't pass the moral litmus test."
again, like a couple others have noted, Wal-Mart and major retailers commission products like these and magazines/high volume food items etc out to vendors/distributors so Wal-Mart isn't taking the hit, they're getting their commission percentage. The vendor/distributor is taking the hit and it's their fault. In college I worked for a music distributor so I had a route with a few major retailers like W-Mart and we shipped our CDs to the store, I show up and before anything hits the sales floor I was responsible for scanning the barcodes on all of our CDs to make sure our pricepoints matched W-Mart's. So in this case the rep from this vendor dropped the ball. They obviously didn't do their job..most likely they phoned it in and took the product right from the store room to the sales floor without checking anything. I'm not saying it's right what the buyer did but this isn't on Wal-Mart it's on the vendor in question. I have no idea who supplies W-Mart, I know at Meijer stores one of the major magazine distributors used to handle their card boxes & supplies...not sure if they still do or not but they would be the ones taking the hit in this case. All of these types of outside vendors have shady under the table relations with these corporate retailers, giving them promotional items like Trek mountain bikes, electronics, tickets to games/events, or anything else said company is sponsoring for additional shelf/display space or allowing them more backroom storage space for their products so the salesmen can over-order and hit their bonuses.
Um I guess alot of folk did not see the PBS special Frontline about Walmart a couple of years ago, or read about how the almost bankrupted Vlasic or literally tell companies to move their factories to china or they won't buy from the anymore.
I have dealt with them as a supplier for alot of years and their tactics and abuse of their buying power is beyond absurd.
They don't want friendly or mutually beneficial relationships with suppliers. In fact you have to open up your entire purchasing and wharhouse computer systems to them. Install their SAP system and let them tell you how to order ingredients or what the inventory mins and maxes should be. They will also tell you what waste "IE jobs" should be cut out of your "un-optimized system that they will optomize for you for free" and then want you to pass along the savings to them as price reductions.
Now unless your a Coke or Nestle these rules don't apply of course.
Also, who's to actually say this price is wrong. Alot of the "sticker" prices at walmart are artifically high to make the actual sell price look like a great deal. In this case we know what it should have sold for but would a kid or a mom? It's not like he used a gun to rob the place. Systems are in place to prevent this and they failed, blame IT.

I love crumbled Blue cheese, as I sprinkle it on my salad all the time! The rest of my family can't even get past the smell, and hate blue cheese (I just love that sticky, smelly blue-veined mold! LOL!)
I buy a domestic "store brand", as the imported Danish blue cheese is just soooooooooooooooo damn expensive. For example I pay $2.99 for 5 oz of the domestic brand. It's Ok, I like it!
The "imported blue cheese" is currently $7.98 for a 5 oz. container of Rosenborg Danish Blue cheese. Pretty expensive, as a 5 oz container gets used-up by me fairly fast! LOL!
I could not believe my eyes as I'm looking to satisfy my "crumbled blue cheese fix" at the supermarket. I see a sign and it says 2 containers of Rosenborg Blue cheese for $6! Holy cow!
The sign was sitting there, but not a single container was available for sale! (All gone!)
I walked over to customer service, and asked someone there to follow me to the imported cheese section. They did! I showed them the sign and they freaked when they saw 2 containers for six bucks. As they knew, as well as I knew that the price seemed way too low!
I asked them if they would honor that price via a "rain check", and they said yes! They gave me 2 rain checks (@ 2 for $6!)...
I was happy! But to be honest, I never thought about the big picture, brought up on this thread. (i.e., price shrinkage, passed on to other consumers, or passed on to the supermarket's employees, via salary reduction, personal moral issues,etc.)...
I cashed-in the first rain check this week and almost used-up all of the first 5 ounces of Danish blue cheese. (Yummy!)
My family says that the Danish imported variety smells far worse than the domestic brand. Maybe they are right?
Come on guys - this has nothing to do with Walmart or any other corporation one might not like or think is on the up and up...
That discussion could takes hours, days, months, yrs - we could do a masters and a Phd thesis on it.
It's simple - in general - if one knows they are underpaying for an item - it's a form of stealing - and the vendor is not relevant to the transgression.
Super Bowl XXVIII: Buffalo Bills vs Dallas Cowboys - Running back Emmitt Smith rushed for 132 yards and 2 touchdowns earning Super Bowl MVP honors as the Cowboys defeated the Bills 30-13 to win their second consecutive NFL title.
There are FOUR Wal-Marts within 9 miles of my house... FOUR (8.9 miles, 7.0 miles, 6.7 miles, and 3.6 miles)! I hate them, I don't patronize them, and I absolutely LOVE it when they get ripped off, regardless of the vendor or employee who takes the brunt of it. Screw 'em...
I consider myself a very scrupulous person... I've done all the "good things" for people, like telling a cashier they gave me too much change, let someone know they just dropped a $20 bill out of their pocket, and I've even stopped and helped an old guy change his tire... but if I were ever desperate enough to set foot into one of those stores, and somehow they screwed up by charging me the wrong price for something, I would certainly not tell them about it.
Some people just plain deserve to pay for their ignorance sometimes, and Wal-Mart is one of them. Kudos to the OP...
Wow, this isn't a thread I expected to jump into tonight, but...
I really think those that are lauding the OP's actions are forgetting one thing: It's not about Wal-Mart. It's about the character of a person willing to act immorally for his/her own gain. Wal-Mart is just a background player in this story. You can SAY you wouldn't act that way with a local card shop or other non mega-business, but your previous actions are the only means with which you can be judged by. And based on them, I wouldn't expect many on this forum to be lining up to conduct business with the OP.
These type of actions remind someone who pulled a big box hit out of the first pack and then replaced the pack with an unopened one from another box and sold it on eBay as a full box - knowing there was no hit in there for the end user. And you can SAY you wouldn't do that. But we only have your previous actions on which to judge you.
<< <i>Wal-Mart employees also receive a bonus each year based on many factors and one of those is the amount of shrink in their store. The less shrink...the more bonus. These people dont make a lot of money anyway but again, by not being honest you are taking money away from them. >>
I am assuming this stops at the managers and doesn't trickle down to the cashiers or greeters? They didn't get the nickname always low wages for nothing. >>
Ummm you are wrong about this... Even the greeters and cart pushers share in the bonuses. It does not matter the position in the store the bonuses are for the employees.
I swear so many of you are reinforcing the sadness I feel about the loss of all things that are good right in our society. To have a huge amount of people justify the theft regardless of which store it came from really makes me sad. Its theft and its being justified by a good many posters here. Its not ok if it comes from the mom and pop store but because it comes from Wal-Mart then its fine? Next time an Ebay deal goes south and you lose your money and your card.....well dont come around here and whine about it. Hopefully the person that rips you off is worse off than you and then he can justify his reasons for the theft of your card because, well after all you have more money than he does so that makes it all right.
What a bunch of totally unethical people who are only making this society worse because of your justifications. Its a sad day for all of us and getting sadder by the day. What will you justify next? parking in handicapped stalls because you couldnt find anything close and your knee is hurting? Fudging your time card at work because. well its a big company and they can afford to pay me a few extra minutes a day.
When crap like this starts hitting your wallet maybe you will care but up until that time I am sure you will go one being led around by your motto......"hey. aint my problem!". To the OP..enjoy those cards, I hope they come back 10's but I hope everytime you look at them you know that you were wrong.Although I doubt you will feel anything...it seems your morals have been removed awhile ago.
I Have a strong feeling that 85 percent of the posters here would have done the same thing! Its easy to say you wouldnt, when it dosent happen to YOU! Also, the cashiers till will equal out, as that was the price that was scanned and cash received......
...but I am sure all you genisus and hypocritics knew this info before you judged! Let he without sin cast the first stone, anyone from the 1st 2 pgs want to step up??? Or is the MBs full of Apostles?
Well I am not a big fan of Walmart as a shopping experience, I am a shareholder as this is one of the best recession proof stocks. When times are tough people shop where their dollar goes further.
From 2007 to present you actually would have gained market value buying and holding Walmart which is not the case for 99% of the other stocks.
That being said, we need to get inline as a country with some sort of basic universal health care in addition to the private system. For every low paid worker without coverage at WMT, the higher wage earners are in turn already subsidizing health care through programs which give children free health care, low income coverage, and emergency coverage for the uninsured.
Yeah the OPs actions are really a slippery slope. I am sure getting rung up for the wrong amount at a Wal Mart leads to armed robber, drug use and then murder. Did the guy actually commit a crime? Geeze you would think he punched a baby by the responses here.

This is a very interesting thread on many fronts. I think the OP was very happy with the price and probably didn't like the general response of the boards. He then replied with some nonsense and probably wont be posting his "rip"-offs on this thread. The Walmart side of the thread is a mess. Walmart is so bad in many ways, but there are tons of familys that depend on stores like that to get their living needs. I don't go there often but they are always packed.
<< <i>What will you justify next? parking in handicapped stalls because you couldnt find anything close and your knee is hurting? >>
Well, should we draw the distinction between perm and temp handicap? The point of the spot is to facilitate disabled people accessing the store. If your knee is in pain to the point of immobility, I don't see that there is any difference. You just didn't go to the DMV and pay the fee for the sticker. In that case, I would recommend meters in those spots, and and if a cop comes by and tickets you, you just a dr's note saying it was necessary ex post facto.
Just yesterday I parked in an "expectant mother" spot. Of course, my 37 week pregnant wife was with me.
Kiss me once, shame on you. Kiss me twice.....let's party.
Wow, I'm definitely learning a lot of about forum members based off this thread. I agree with most, regardless of where you bought it, boil it down to the basics and it is stealing.
I get a kick out of Walmart haters, when the people that made Walmart successful is ourselves! Remember, no one is ever forced to shop at Walmart, and everyone has other options to fulfill their needs. Yeah, maybe we'll have to visit a couple of stores to accomplish this, but don't hate Walmart for providing a cheap one stop shop. If Walmart started to pay higher wages and not consistently beat down their suppliers, the prices of their products would eventually go up, and Americans would start looking for another cheaper alternative like KMart or Target. So don't hate Walmart, hate Americans who want to pay bottom and dollar and hate the principals of capitalism.
I wonder how threads like this get 4+ pages of replies, and quality threads about generous give aways sometimes never get more than a dozen responses. Its too bad.
I believe its because it gives some of these folks reason to talk negative or try to bring down a person for there own personal gain or make themselves look better than another.
Thanks for posting the scans. I'm not sure how its theft when you pay for the item?
Super Bowl XXVIII: Buffalo Bills vs Dallas Cowboys - Running back Emmitt Smith rushed for 132 yards and 2 touchdowns earning Super Bowl MVP honors as the Cowboys defeated the Bills 30-13 to win their second consecutive NFL title.
I work at a superstore similar to walmart, although its a very small chain and stuff like this happens all the time, alot of the time we dont even know about it and if someone calls to tell this kind of mistake has been we basically say thanks for your honesty but theres nothing we can do! Walmart is on such a larger scale that they probably dont even care..plus im under the impression that was probably the correct price..we have the same sort of things in our store, it will have a msrp and then a shelf tag for a ridicuosly lower price! And i am 100% sure the cashier felt no heat over this, they probably thought it was the correct price! I just cant believe how so many reacted! Ive never stolen a thing in my life but even if the op had done something i considered stealing i couldnt sit back and bash him the way you do! I had no idea there were so many perfect people here! Imo alot of you seriously overreacted to the situation! Now with that being said if it was me this happened to and after the fact they said oh im sorry we made a mistake..we need another 100 i would not hesitate to take care of the situation. At the end of the day you got a good price and walmart cares alot less than the people on this board!
Btw..walmart,as well as the company i work for, have money set aside for inventory time to take care of shrinkage and an account for any overage. If indeed this was a 100 dollar mistake it wouldnt even be a blip on there inventory radar!

Wal Mart needs to step up and allow their workforce to unionize, this company and so many others companies in America can afford to provide sufficient health care to their employees, why bail them out with taxpayers $$$ so the bottom line at Wal Mart doesnt get touched?
Our current options for health care reform is a step in the wrong direction.
As for Wal Mart...any way you cut the story they are a bad bad empire...
I say hostile takeover of Wal Mart and boost our own economy...not China.
I have kind of mixed feelings about this. I would have to say that you might have pissed the "Baseball card gods" off and they might not be kind to you in the future when you go to get your cards graded, but knowing that many of us are human and during this time of economic decline I can't say that I would have said something. I might have, I have in the past, but at the same time I just don't know during this particular situation. Would it have been such a big deal when they were 5 cent wax packs?
If you hadn't opened it you could have gone back in a few days without a receipt and got $119 for it. Then buy the rest of them at $19 each. Rinse/repeat. Buy low sell high.

Whether Walmart is a saint or devil to the community has no bearing on the issue of knowing the price is wrong on a product.

Let's drop the subject already.
Business ethics and politics are dirtier than anything we've ever done as individuals in society.

Kiss me twice.....let's party.

For the record you may think that you didn't say a word except "thank you" but I can assure you that you said so much more.
