Home Metal Detecting

Do you own more than one type of detector?

I have my Fisher CZ-3D as an all-purpose relic/coin land detector, but I really want a second detector. I'm just torn between getting an underwater detector (I *loved* snorkeling and want to try scuba diving.) or a gold detector for nugget hunting. I'm not sure which one of those two would get those most use.

Holy cow, I'm hooked, despite almost no successes. image

I have 2 detectors a Garrett Ace 250 and a Whites 5000-D. Never did understand the Whites all that much, the Ace is much easier to use.

I have five detectors, DFX, GMT, TDI, Dual PI Pro and Pro.... they have their purposes. For nugget hunting I would recommend the GMT or TDI... the TDI is a PI machine. Cheers, RickO
  • im with you laserart, i have a whites 5000Di (i believe it is ??) never could figure out how to use that thing, stands up well in the closet though ! my primary detector is an "ancient" garrett GTA1000 i bought new in '93 a million times easier to use,

    Used to.

Down to just the Garrett GTI-2500 these days.

I still want another Troy Shadow for relic hunting.

PS- for a while I had a Fisher 1280-X Aquanaut underwater machine as a secondary detector. I liked it, though the hardwired headphones (no speaker) made it hot and uncomfortable to use on land in spring and summer. I found my oldest coin with it on a dry land site, though. It was a good relic machine. Aside from some beach hunting (out of the water), I never used it much anywhere wet.

    3 machines

    Minelab Explorer for land hunting
White's surf PI for water hunting
    White's MXT as backup

If you're looking to find jewelry, your finds will get a big boost from a water machine. Gold nugget hunting also sounds like great fun, but is probably quite "binary" as far as success goes (fantastic success if you find one, vs. getting totally skunked a lot of the time). I would think you need plenty of patience for that stuff...

I see you have "gold anything" in your top 10 want list. Chances are it won't take too long if you hunt in the water. Out of the 15 gold rings in my signature picture below, 10 are found with the water machine (while detecting hours are probably 85%+ on land)
From that you can derive that water hunting for me has been >10 times more productive for finding gold
Minelab: GPX 5000, Excalibur II, Explorer SE. White's: MXT, PI Pro

Thanks Zot! I live near a lot of swimming holes that are around three to ten feet deep. I think a water detector would be the best bang for my buck. Congrats on those rings!
