Are high priced Mint State Grades Overrated?

BECOKABECOKA Posts: 16,961 ✭✭✭
I got to thinking based on the moon money thread, I really like MS gold coins but not as much as I like circulated coins with character. For me the difference is about $6000 between a nice VF example to a nice MS62 example.

I think I would rather buy 6-10 of these over 1 nice MS example what say you?

Edited: BTW thanks again to CRO who I bought this from a year or two ago

while high grade MS is very appealing to me i cannot stand lower
grade MS coins. you pay such a premium for a so-so look.

i find that P01-xf45 is where i like to be when it comes to old gold.
you can find a coin that has so much character it is ridiculous for
a much more realistic price for a budget minded collector.

Every coin has a story. I like the original look of your coin.image

Sorry I don't have much to show my point other than Classic Heads but here is an AU58 with a very old skin and almost no luster breaks for less than 1/3 the cost of an MS example.

  • MS high grade for me all the way...to my eye the rest just look like dirty old coins...nothing wrong with those but MS just looks better to me...

Not saying I would not own an MS example but how many cool circ examples could I buy for the funds that MS D coin? imageimage

You could probably have one Coin A or Nine Coin Bs.

I like gold no matter what the grade..... I like the proofs for their glistening perfection... low MS for character... and even lower for the intriguing, never to be known, history. It's all good - gold. Cheers, RickO

I'm a fan of mint state coins personally, although I don't collect old gold.

Although this turned out to be a gold thread the original thought was applied to all coins Gold, Silver, Copper, Clad .......

  • If you look around you can find nice MS-62's that are undergraded for pretty good prices at least in the Morgan series.

I guess for Morgans it would be the difference between PQ MS64-65 coin and an MS67-68 coin. In this case I would rather have many PQ 64-65 coins than just one 67 or 68.

Depends on your preferences (and budget) of course, but I agree with you. I love my coins to have a little character!!

I'm afraid i'm going to have to disagree.

And you all call yourself collectors. Harumph.

The only correct solution is to have one high grade MS coin and a bunch of lower grade coins. A choice of one or the other is foolish nonsense. You all should know that.

5000. Time for a giveaway. I'll deal with it after work tonight.

  • I love circ coins from the 18th and 19th century. The stories they could tell. The living history that is embodied by them. How often were they spent? On what? By whom?

On the other hand, I also collect proof coins from the 19th century. This makes me feel connected to coin collectors of a bygone era as well. How many owners over the years? What collections were they part of? Sold at auctions? Private treaty?

I tend not to collect MS coins. They are the ones that, although I can appreciate the beauty of nice ones, I lack the emotional connection to.

    But to each his own.

    merse
