POLL, OR POOL- How many posters will admit to paying up for coins (PQType's thread)

Moon money: not sure what that is.

How about: a significant premium over Guide Price ("significant" being your own determination)...

I've done it and I'll do it again for the right coin.
Positive BST transactions with: too many names to list! 36 at last count.
  • fewer than 6
    7 to 12
    13 to 18
    19 to 24
    more than 24

(sorry: I finished the poll prematurely; had to delete it-- it's now a "pool")

I have and the longer I look at coins the more I'd be willing to do it again.

Of course PQ can be in any grade and a high premium on a VF/XF example for a coin in my series is still affordable.

    Edited with example:

Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

  • as one may guess, i collect seated coins, and in the seated world, one has to be willing to pay minimum 3x trends or redbook or whatever to get ahold of even the semi-keys. for instance, an 1846 dime redbooks for $75 in Gd it is a low mintage but they show up. but you will pay a minimum of $200 for one, the 74cc dime redbooks for $2600 in GD but if you found one it would be priced upwards of $10K. im sure the same thing can be said for any scarce to rare coins, there are people who try to buy at "ask" and "bid" or 10% back of one or the other, or whatever, if i can buy what i want at only DOUBLE redbook i consider that a score !

price guides print historical. even the PCGS online guide is a reflection of previously paid amounts.

I found an old thread on this subject. In the July 2008 poll about 19% of collectors consistently look for high quality at high prices. Fully 70% of respondents say that quality is their focus (at varying prices). To contrast that, less than 5% consistently are looking for bargain bin quality, even if they can get it at very low prices.

  • I refuse to answer the question. What if word got out that I am perfectly happy paying "moon money" for the coins that I like enough to put in my personal collection? image You can't be too careful.

In fact, I am taking down the names of all of the people who respond to this thread that they will pay above trends. That way, if they enquire about something that I have listed on the BST, I know I don't have to haggle - they will pay up!

Seriously though - I have rarely (never?) regretted paying up for a coin that I really, really liked. I have occasionally regretted letting a few get away, because I thought the asking price was beyond a reasonable PQ premium. Low end/ugly/problen coins, I will not buy at any price. I will never be pleased to own them. I collect coins, not bargains.

I will pay what the coin is worth - to me. Usually that is NOT the marked price. And price guides - well... the operative word is 'guide'. Cheers, RickO

There are no realistic guides for what I collect.

I have on a few key coins, but overall my investment is 64% of the total collection value so it evens out with the coins I got below book

If it appeals to my prurient interests in numismatics price becomes less of a factor and desire more.

I have several times in the past. The coin must be PQ and I must see it in hand first. No Ebay or Internet bidding above market value for me. If I wanna gamble I go to Biloxi.
