I'm a little taken aback PCGS is allowing (or, is unaware of). . .

Swoopo.com is advertising on these forums (under the Google ads). Swoopo has been investigated appears to be a bit of a sham.

Here's a copy/paste of the ad:

"$5.51 For 1 Ounce Gold
This One Just Went For $5.51 On Swoopo. Bid On Yours Now!
www.Swoopo.com/Gold "

A quick check from your favorite search engine will reveal Swoopo for what it really is.

My guess is as soon as PCGS is aware of this they will no longer allow Swoopo to advertise on their site.

Try unaware of. The adds are from the Google content network, PCGS does not control the adds in any way. If PCGS is alerted that someone is showing up that shouldn't they can request them not to show again.

They even let my pesky little adds in......

A Swoopo auction of a FirstStrike™ would be interesting to watch.

Atop the page, just as I logged in, I saw this

    $5.51 For 1 Ounce Gold
This One Just Went For $5.51 On Swoopo. Bid On Yours Now!

  • very interesting concept of bidding... definately worth it for swoopo. They reap the profits! but it can be worth it for the buyer if they are wary and win... if you don't win you lose a lot. So in that sense it is not worth it.

  • Is someone watching them to make sure theyre not shilling their own goods? What kind of moron would bid .02 for a 1 oz gold knowing theyre throwing .60 in the crapper?

this item swoopo actually lost money on. only $213 in fees were taken in. only loss i've seen so far...

isn't it google who controls ads?

or does PCGS have veto power on individual ads?

    Good question!

I'm not sure but I do know that Don Willis should be made aware of this.

    CU, pay attention.

  • I believe CU has no control over the ads that are rotated throughout page views. It's a simple javascript code that is used on CU pages provided by google based on a related topic (ie coins) based on the content of the website using the ad.

Rightly or wrongly these ad help pay for the forum. This is just a guess not a statment of fact, but an educated guess none the less. Please correct me if I am wrong. The content is controled by Google me thinks...

Oh and please start buying coins!!!

There is no way that CU loses money on the forums without the ads. At the very least it's a wash.

CU does control the ads in the sense that they pimp their forums to GoogleAds.

  • Aaah...the "reverse auction" as I've heard those referred to in the past. You really can steal some of the stuff in those "auctions", but you would have to have absolutely no life to spend all day starring at the computer screen to watch the time on the item your bidding on reset over and over every minute or two. I guess if you were in a body cast and could only use your fingers those kind of auctions would be awesome.

  • ...And if you block any of these ads, you get booted... Very nice indeed PCGS...

I do recall one of the PCGS Mods (Don Willis possibly?) stating that they can choose to block certain ads and most likely with people complaining they'll look into it and block the negative ads. At least I hope they would, it's definitely not classy for any respectable business to have scam ads on their page.

See this thread for PCGS instructions on getting these ads removed.

This isn't a reverse auction - it's a true auction that charges you to place a bid. Each bid raises the price by a certain amount (which varies) In addition the time until the auction ends is increased after every bid.

if you don't like a ad, then just disregard it.
I disregard most ads I see automatically.
It's income to PCGS, and I for one,
am happy if they make a lot of money,
maybe they will lower their grading fees, or
supply more services, like this forum.

The ads are nothing more than wallpaper if you do not read them.... decoration for those discerning forum readers. Cheers, RickO
