Unethical dealers make me angry

adamlaneusadamlaneus Posts: 6,969 ✭✭✭
I thought that a retailer was obliged to honor the price posted on items they sell.

Well, I want this item. I can clearly see a $20 price tag on the item. But the dealer looks at me as if i'm on drugs. It makes me angry.

What is my recourse? It says $20. Why isn't the sales price being honored? Lousy dealers.

Isn't there a state federal law about this in my county? America is a big ponzi scheme. Grumble. Gripe. Stew. Vent.

haha. You know, I never noticed these were $20 denominations. Just figured they were $50.

When I offered the posted $20 price for this item, the dealer pulled a classic bait and switch on me.

He pulled out a book. Hemmed and hawwed a bit. Then said that it will be $1500 for this coin.

WHAT!?!? It's a $20 coin! Says so right there on the label AND on the coin. And i'm supposed to believe some guy reading out of a book!?!?

I want it because it's cheaper than those $50 coins.

And now he is quoting me a price that is waaaay out of the ballpark.

This sounds like willful infringement of my civil rights. Aren't I entitled to triple damages?

Why is the world so unclear on issues which are actually crystal clear?

It says $20, but that is just a starting price, right??

You should be able to talk him down from there.

You just need to quit overanalyzing things, dude.

But the essential unfairness of this world galls me as well.

Well, i'm going to the Fremont coin show.

We shall see how many 'ethical' dealers are there.

I'm going to want to purchase two half-cents. Somehow, I feel it's not going to go well.

I'm off of my meds for a week now and i'm feeling very fryingpan, thank you.

Back in the mid '70's, I was at the
Statler Hilton Hotel coin show for
    the Calif. State Numismatics society
    (the now host-hotel Grand Wilshire
for the upcoming ANA in downtown LA).

I was working for Numismatics, Ltd.,
and buying US gold in huge quantities
    in Europe.

I had a showcase full of raw $20 St.
Gaudens - a guy walks up to the table,
asks how much they are - I tell him
    "Two Fifty Each".

He throws down a $10 bill, and says
    "I'll take four of 'em"

    He was serious.....

Since this is about a dealer, I will defer to seaeaglecoins as I am sure he will have an anecdote about what should be expected image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Back in my days of working retail, there were plenty of times where an item would be priced at say $19.99. Somehow, the "19" would "fall off", and the customer would bring the item to the counter, demanding it for .99! They would threaten to call the state and file a complaint. If they did, I never heard about it.

I was at a coin show once when I asked a woman behind a table if I could look at one of her high grade Morgan dollars. She said that her husband won't allow her to touch any of his coins ever since she sold one for 50 cents. She was dead serious. image

I remember an old man asking a local dealer about a nice unc 32-D quarter in his case, marked $1000 -- no decimals etc... the man offered him a $10 bill for it. At least it was somewhat within reason to make such a mistake, vs. the story about $10 for four double eagles!
