Auction Vs. Dealers

I just received my NEWPs from the Heritage Summer FUN auction. I never get in hand what the pics look like. On occasion I am pleasantly surprised, but most often a coin in hand (and under the lens) doesn’t live up to expectations. Maybe it’s the anticipation of receiving my newps that’s the high, and not the coin I get. I have, like most here, bought numerous coins from auctions, dealers, and at shows. I’ve made more mistakes than I can recount, however I’m almost always pleased with the coins that I have transacted with the well known dealers. Most all of the dealers I mention have been spoken about highly on this board.
All of these well respected dealers are extremely honest in their assessment of their inventory and would be happy to check the preauction viewing if I would ask. I would own better coins, be much happier in my collecting endeavors, and have a better quality collection when the time comes for sale, if I would bone up and extra 5% to have these trusted pros bid for me on auction items THEY APPROVE, or pay the price they offer to sell inventory coins (at our best arraignment of course) than to continue to throw money down the drain on coins that I’m not satisfied with and immediately want to upgrade.
For those that go it strictly on their own to save a few dollars on cut rate prices, buying auction pics-not auction coins, and avoiding the expertise of those paid to help, you will be doing a disservice to your collection, and any future sale value. Yes, this had all been said dozens of times, and better worded than my rant, but BONE UP AND BUY THE BEST. And if your not present pay these pros to help out. You and your collection will be better off.
Now all you dealers PM me and I’ll give you an address to send my $5 to.

How about $5 to put in breaks and paragraphs? image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

OR... one could get as good as the experts by studying, seminars, etc..... OR.... some collectors do not want the VERY BEST!! Cheers, RickO

Don't trust dealers, they are evil and out to take your money...

It certainly is a good way to go, to get dealer referrals and work with those dealers. Many collectors do that and enjoy the hobby. The original post seems to indicate that he/she can detect quality when the coin is in hand, so perhaps the lesson is to buy more in person, though admittedly that may not be possible for those with busy schedules.

However, to think the stated way, is the only way, or the best way for everyone is a stretch. The hobby is a big tent, there are many levels of price, quality, grade, etc. Almost every coin can find a happy home. Many of the coins that the original poster calls "money down the drain," would almost certainly be welcome in some other person's collection. The caveat is that the price might be quite different from the auction hammer price.

It would be educational for everyone to see Heritage links/photos to some of the "down the money" coins and why the original poster wasn't happy with those selections when examined in hand.

Quickwing, any links to some of these regrettable purchases and what was disappointing when the coins arrived? I'm sure many readers will find your mistakes to be of high value.

Now you know why people say that you should view Heritage coins in-hand (or have them viewed for you) before placing bids.

Thanks RedTiger. I saw that in your first post. If I was not going to put these back into the market I would gladly post those "regrettable purchases". However I don't think when they hit the BST forum and I just called them a POS it would help me unload some of those mistakes. If any kind soul were to purchase some coins from Quickwing they would be properly advertised and priced thoughimage I've had only positive experiences in buying and selling there, and I would hope anyone that has made a transaction with me has been equally happy. I am confident that I will be outed by the smart police that watch these things closely.
By the way your post was spot on. I do believe I can spot a nice coin in hand, and the pro's I have dealt with sure can! They can add great value when you build a working relation with these dealers.
