crossovers and regrades: how are they working out?

is the climate getting any better?
are you satisfied, or disappointed, with what you're getting back from the TPGs?

I'm sitting on a number of reallty nice raw Morgans, and some commems with some apparent room for upgrading , just waiting.. and getting a bit anxious.
WILL WORK FOR CENTS, QUARTERS, HALVES, DOLLARS....

Last I heard was to not submit to PCGS right now because they are brutal on grades. Seems to have been the case for four months or so. Must be CAC doing its job well.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

I sent in 6 PCGS FR02 commems for possible downgrades. I got the info of no change from the Order Status but not a word or note as to why when I received them back.

  • I've been hearing from everyone that PCGS is being real tough right now, and NGC is bagging tons of NT coins. Anyone know if ANACS & ICG are being so ridiculously tight right now?

Sounds to me like the TPG's are doing their job and assigning appropriate grades. Those 'hoping to get away with something' will be disappointed... Those wishing a professional opinion - will get it. As to toning.... if they are bagging more of them, that is because there IS more of them, and most people cannot tell AT from NT - especially with the skills now applied. I am always amazed to hear 'they are grading tough right now' - which means, that if the submitter had the appropriate skill level - the grade would have been apparent prior to submission. This answer seems crazy to me...

How will you know when it's a good time to submit your coins again?
How long are you going to wait? And what exactly are you waiting for?
Would you rather PCGS be liberal on their grading standards? That would just mean that your coins would likely end up overgraded.
Wouldn't it be better to have PCGS be "brutal" on grading so that your coins would be accurately graded or even undergraded in the holder? If you're looking to sell, I think collectors pay more for coins they believe are undergraded.

We regularly submit and have found the recent grading to be just fine.

As far as grading coins correctly, I can't complain much (well, at least with PCGS anyways). I don't fool with white or red coins though, so it is very disappointing to see that both TPG's are bagging so many toners that don't even look questionable at all. When I say they are being tough, I'm referring to all the NT coins that are not being certified when they should be. If any company is going to claim that they are the best experts in numismatics and charge $20 for their opinion, I expect that they would be able tell the difference between an AT coin and a NT coin. As uncertain as they seem to be lately, it is huge waste of money trying to submit a decent amount of coins when you only collect toned coins.

There are more AT coins now than ever, but most of them are very easily identifiable. There are only a handful of "doctors" that actually do a really good job of making the coin look natural, but even most of the really good AT jobs have certain characteristics that give them away if you are familiar with that particular type of doctoring. I can pick out about 10 different styles of AT coins that I still occasionally see in holders, and I have a pretty good idea where each different style is generally coming from (no idea how each different technique is done though). Lately, the TPG's graders are being ridiculously tough on toned coins, and yet they are still occasionally slabbing AT coins. In my opinion, there should be a couple of people such as myself (that have primarily focused their interests in toned coins and can identify them with better certainty) that examine a coin before it goes to the current graders that seem so unsure about anything these days. I know of at least a dozen people off the top of my head that I would feel comfortable with their assessment of a toned coin's originality, but right now I'm scared to send anything in with the graders being so quick to bag anything with color.

That raises the question of the whole PQ argument at the top of the page. Let's say I submitt a coin in this tight grading enviroment and it comes back AU-50, but has the appeal of almost every AU55 coin on the market. Won't it then trade for a premium anyway, regardless of the the grade on the holder?
