1961 unopened proof sets

I attended a estate sale this weekend and bought a unopened box from the U.S. mint containing 100- 1961 proof sets. I was wondering if I should open each set and take a look or leave them sealed? Someone told me they had some mint errors in that year that may be worth something. Is it worth opening them or should I just sell them sealed as is? THANKS!

True. But, the OP said he bought an unopened BOX containing 100 proof sets. That is a lot different than buying proof sets in so-called "unopened envelopes".

    I agree with this post:

<< <i>Yes, rip them open and search them now! Theres a DDR half worth several thousand dollars! Im sure theres some other cool varieties in there, but thats the big one! >>

except I would say the DDR half is worth "a few" thousand, not "several".

If you do this, let us know what you find!

I would open half and if no good finds sell the other half on ebay and try to get some of your money back. Just a thought.

I found the big DDR Franklin in an unopened proof set. Here is a pic of the area to look for.

I would start by looking at 10-20 sets. Look for cameos and varieties and then make a decision as to whether to open the next group. Its a bit like lottery tickets.

I'd open 10-20 like cameonut said and see if anything comes up.

PM me if you'd like to sell a few.

In addition to the double die Franklin half, I would look out for Cameo or Deep Cameo examples of any or all of the five coins in each proof set.

1961 Deep Cameo proof franklin halves are surprisingly hard to find and can bring hefty price tags if they are also high grade coins.

Any Cameo or Deep Cameo coins from 1961 are hard to find.

I think Val Web would open every fifth or tenth set to check for cameos. That way he would still have a majority of the sets sealed when he resold them.
  • Hey going broke

If you want to sell a few I'd be interested, 1961 is my birth year, I'll send you a scan of my driver's license to prove it image

    let me know, thanks
  • Well, I opened 250 of the 1961 proof sets and examined them as close as I could. None of the coins were damaged by the packages no staining at all no milk spots. Minor toning blue in color on some of the Nichols could be seen although this was very light. One of the dimes looked cameo on both the front and back. as far as the double dies on the halves I cant confirm they exist. I tried to photo one of the halves using a magnifying glass and here are the results....

  • I am sorry! I meant 50 of the 1961 sets. I also bought 2 boxes of 1964 ones and opened some of those too. I have never been good at math! LOL
