What happened to this Presidential Dollar? Error? Variety? George Washington the Terminator?

Here's the coin, followed by two sets of closeups under different light. What happened? Is this common?

    That's the starburst struck-through-grease.

Possible, but I don't think these are grease strike-throughs.
I think it is the chrome plating on the die peeling back in a radial pattern
(in other words, a type of die erosion).

I have seen similar coins, and the starburst is incused. If the die plating was peeling back, the areas would be raised.
I vote for struck thru grease.

I admittadly don't know much about grading...but do coins graded 64 usually have that many scratches and dings on them?

I wasn't gonna get into this but my take is that the starburst or rays or whatever you wanna call them is common on the Presidential Dollars.

Having them so well defined is not.

Its collectiblility and value will be determined by someone looking for this particular aspect.

As for what caused it, I could not say for sure and would strongly advise that you forward it to someone at CONECA for examination. Mike Diamond (errormaven) might have something to say about this one.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

  • If you send it back to PCGS they will add on the label that it is struck thru grease. I have seen many of these here in FL. I have some and I have a few friends that have them with the struck thru grease on the label. I personally have one just like this one with the die clash graded as a 63 that has yet to be sent back in for the proper labeling. If sent in this may get you a few extra bucks on the market rather than selling it without the proper label.

Thanks for the info fellows, I think I'll piggyback it along on my next submission just to get the label right.
