very good reason why PCGS holds the top tier, that coin should not be in a regular slab as it appears in my opinion.
Its a high grade but very low eye appeal. Should be in a genuine only holder.

I've got an 1853 quarter that looks like it could be that coin's twin. It's in an ANACS AU Details slab. Since I've have only books and the forums to teach me so far, I've been buying some cleaned stuff so I can learn what it looks like. It seems to be helping, but a lot of you guys would probably get nauseous around my collection.

Don't feel bad, any collector that tells you they have never bought a cleaned coin either has never bought a coin or is lying.

I'm not entirely convinced that those are hairlines. My guess is that it's just ordinary contact marks from circulation, but the poor image quality (way too much direct lighting) is exaggerating the imperfections, thus making the coin look a lot worse than it really is. Someone might want to mention this to the seller and ask if he/she can post better quality photos.

Eye appeal has to do with collector preference, the TPG's supply a grade. If it meets the standards - it grades. Your statement is illogical.

yes, the images are poor, but the lack of toning combined with the percieved hairlines indicates a cleaning to me. Also, there appears to be a fair amount of luster remaining which would indicate a higher grade than EF40. This leads me to believe the coin was docked due to a cleaning.

Even if it isn't hairlined, would it be downgraded for being a dipped-out headlight? (serious question, actually!)

I think it may be a fake slab
