Cracking 2009 Proof Sets out - without cracking lenses

MsMorrisineMsMorrisine Posts: 33,500 ✭✭✭✭✭

I want to clean the bits of cardboard off my 2009 proof coins only if I can open the lenses without damaging them.

Anybody with experience who can comment &/or offer advice?

thanks!

All I can say is good luck. I've attempted to very slowly twist and turn these things (taking up to 20 minutes to be as careful as possible). And still something broke off in the process. That plastic just isn't that strong.

Not sure if they're the same, but I found that the lenses on the Presidential Dollar Proof Sets seemed to be held together only by friction. A gentle insertion of a thin screw driver blade at the seam (moving around the seam) separated the 2 pieces enough to finish with a couple of fingernails and slight pressure. ...Opened it with no damage. -Preussen

It really depends upon the Year of Proof Sets you are referring to.

1968-1998 were sealed so cracking those sets generally ruins them.

1999-date there are no seals as the sets are assembled much the same as the mint capsules that individual pieces are shipped it. A sharp knife (I use a flat bladed X-Acto knife) slipped under a corner seam and then working your way around the entire perimeter of the lens will lift and separate the top and bottom lenses.

Work carefully though especially when using a sharp knife. I have, on occasion, managed to somehow open more than just the proof set lens!

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I've had no trouble prying these open at least as far back as 1994. They are held together by friction only. I use the small blade on my pocket knife, work it into the seem and then pry the two halves apart, then work completely around all four sides.
