someone just paid me their money for groceries with a 1950 20 dollar bill

i was cashiering at the grocery store...and a lady walks in. i scan her stuff. she takes out her wallet, smiles, and hands me the bills. i look at what she hands me and a HUGE smile crosses my face...you know, the one where you feel like you just made out with the prom queen, that kind of smile...she looks at me and says, "what?" i say, "nothing." she thinks nothing of it, i give her HER change, and it is done. then at my break i IMMEDIATELY call the parents, tell them, get 20 dollars, bring it over QUICK. ok so the bill is series "1950 D" code: L58299386C. worth anything?!!! image

Was she looking for her change to be pre-1950 minted?
  • if there WAS any, i wouldn't give it to her! but in all honesty, how many of you would hand over 21 dollars for my crisp baby?

  • nasty as sh*t...that's what your smile looks like i bet
  • "then at my break i IMMEDIATELY call the parents, tell them, get 20 dollars, bring it over QUICK"

Dude, by the time I was six years old, I had saved $20 for myself. Why do you need to call your parents to bring you $20? I wouldn't be proud of that part of the story, anyway.

It's great that you're working, but you're never going to be able to collect coins seriously if you can't save money.
  • ok, that makes PERFECT sense, since being a serious collector means taking 20 dollars to work, in case someone hands you an old bill, so you have to be PREPARED, and having all of my money in the bank instead of in my pocket when i go to work means i don't save ANY money yeah...you're an idiot.

Imagine food stamps being collectible. People would be selling them on eBay.

Well the "You Idiot" part was a little over the top but given what he was responding to,

I might have responded the same way as it was kind of a dumb assumption. I can't remember the number of times I've had less than 2 or 3 bucks in my pocket when I really needed more.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Beware of old bills -- these are the most likely to be counterfeited these days since they didn't have safety features.

A friend of mine once got questioned by the Secret Service for two hours over a bogus 1934 series $20 that he had unknowingly passed -- he had got it from at ATM machine.

    No they're not.

I did not know that... why is it against the law? Seems no different than coins or currency. Cheers, RickO

I agree with this comment. I would have responded the same way, without the "you idiot" part.

It maybe but they are still collected. You can find them for sale on eBay and I believe there are a few members on currency side which collect them. I started a thread about it long ago and received many different replies. They are collected legal or not.
