A lesson on the importance of answering coin inquiries as soon as possible.

This morning when I got to work I was told that another employee in the building was looking for me with a question about some coins. I put it off until just a few minutes ago when things slowed down at lunch. When I went to her office, she had just finished making the dates easier for me to read by using a pencil eraser.

Thankfully, nothing of great value was there but I feel if I had called her this morning, I would have been able to keep this from happening.

Did you explain to her that she destroyed much of their value?

I did, as kindly as possible, and she said she didn't know, which I can understand. I kind of hope there's more but doubt it.

Some years back an older mgr came to my office, as he heard I 'knew coins'....said he wanted me to give an informal appraisal on something he had. I said sure, and he came back a short while later with what used to a fairly high grade 1835 large cent, that had been polished to death. I said 'Hmm, it looks like it's been polished'.....he said, with pride 'yes, I polish all my coins every year'.....I said "well stop it - you are ruining them!"....

since coins are meant to be used,
    thrown on the counter,
    put in the pocket, etc
It only bothers collectors to shine them up
and make them look pretty and new

Might as well dip them and make them uniformly shiney.

    really,
the more the public "ruins" their holding,
    the more ours are worth

When I was about 7 or 8 years old, I had an elderly neighbor that had a bunch of old coins. She knew I collected coins, so would invite me over to help her shine them up with silver polish. So there we would both sit for an hour at a time polishing and shining away. image

If half of each date/MM/variety of Morgans currently in existence were suddenly destroyed forever what would that do to the value of the remaining half?

I found a coworker who was into state quarters. She brought some in and traded for a few lincolns. At first glance they looked nice and I told her. She says all you have to do is rub them with toothpaste to clean them good.

    They were minty fresh.

While visiting a small B&M a little old lady came in and said to the owner:

"I called you this morning about these 1/2 cents, it took me all afternoon to polish them up". She dropped a handfull of them on the counter. Sad thing was they all had nice details. image

I remember cleaning 4 quarters about 50 years ago, and then breaking a thermometer and rubbing the mercury on them to make them shine. I guess two wrongs don't make a right.

They weren't for sale but I told her if they were, I would have offered $120 for them before cleaning, and $80 after the 'improvements'.
