This could be a good learning experience.
    Many happy BST transactions
  • They all seem reasonably close except for the xf45-vf25. pics to come I hope...

If you were 20 points off on the circulated Peace dollar, you missed something. There is a big difference between 25 & 45.

    PCGS is currently VERY TIGHT.

I just submitted several circulated key date Morgans and the grades given were just as expected and consistent with what they have been giving for years. You may be right regarding MS coins, I have no basis of comparison there. I do think they are tighter on problem coins. I was holding my breath on one of my Morgans due to a few scribbly lines near the date that I was afraid they might call 'scratches' and consider damage.

Hard to give an opinion without pics. At first glance, it seems like the more likely lesson learned is the old cliche "ownership adds a point" when grading (or in this case "ownership adds a point or two"). At this point, regrading might be a waste of time and money. Did you have a more experienced submitter look over any of the coins? That process might have saved you money and disappointment.

It surprises me to learn that a 1964 50c PCGS PF69 is only worth $25 to $35 at Teletrade auction, if there is no CAM or DCAM designation. This means, even if it got PF69 it would be break even at best.

"Ownership adds a point" ...my thought exactly.

"PCGS is tight right now".....This is as true today as it was yesterday and will be tomorrow

PCGS has always been tight. That is why collectors want to own PCGS graded coins and dealers want PCGS to be more like "the other guys".

No offense intended, but I doubt PCGS graders looked at the coins in your submission and thought to themselves that this was a treasure trove of coins that would have to be regraded if they were intentionally conservative in their opinions.

    ...just needed to vent

I do not mean to direct this solely at the original poster and I'll admit my naivety with respect to the grading-world but if one seeks the opinion more-or-less of a stranger albeit
a knowledgeable stranger as to the grade/condition etc. of a coin and the sought opinion differs from expectation what exactly is there to vent about?

Aside from an egregious error on the part of the professional-grader if one does not value or respect the resulting opinion then why seek the opinion in the first place?

  • Honestly, more than likely PCGS was right on with most of these coins. You may not have been though. Thats not anything to get mad about, just learn from the experience and tighten your standards up. PCGS is tight right now, and like others said, ownership adds a point or two. image I dont know if ownership really adds a point, if it does, thats sad.image

Without pics though, how is anyone suppose to tell if you are closer in the right grades or PCGS?

The request for pics is all fine and dandy, but looking at the coins where there is a discrepancy between the OP and PCGS, other than the 34S dollar, do we really think we can tell from the photos who is right, or what the grades should be? We're talking 1-2 point diff's on higher MS and Proof coins. I see AU guesses on MS 64 coins posted, and MS64 guesses on nice AU's, even with good photos.....but if helps as an exercise in education, then there is probably some value in that.

    Here's my opinion in General

PCGS is no tighter on circ coins than they have been the last several years. I haven't seen any change at all in this dept.
OTHER than copper and toned coins, of which they are impossibly over tight.

On MS classic coins at least, yes I do believe they are substantially tighter. I also think they are a bit tighter on MS classic coins that have been lightly cleaned. What can you do ........

If you cannot accept the opinion of professionals, do not bother to submit them - save your money and enjoy the coins at the grade YOU believe they merit. This is not a personal shot.... too many people submit coins to a professional organzation, then complain about the results. I would venture to guess, 99% of these complaints are due to 'ownership' and less than optimum grading skills. If you pay, and are not satisfied, crack it out and enjoy it or PAY AGAIN, and see what happens. Incredible. Cheers, RickO
  • i read all the above replies and came to a few conclusions:

    1. opinions are like @&&#%! every one has one
    2. their (pcgs) opinions is what i sought and paid for
    3. beuaty is in the hand of the holder
    4. only bet on a sure thing
    5. listen more closely to my elder collectors
    6. there is no substitute for knowledge
    7. live and learn

thanks all, i will post pics when i can. andI AGREE if their grading standards were not tight then just "LIKE THE OTHER GUYS", thanks for reminding me what i was paying for....THE BEST

I'm weighing the merits of this thread as I scratch my scalp, totally befuddled over the EF-45 grade that PCGS just assigned to my 1835 Half Eagle. EVERY 1835 Half Eagle in a PCGS AU holder that I have examined over the last six months was a rented mule compared to this coin. CAC here I come...image
