Dahlonega & Calif. fractional gold

Went up to the gold rush gallery in Dahlonega with a friend last week and this is what he got...... unfortunately, I left empty handed but I'm always looking. Gotta love that southern gold!
The Cal. fractional is an R-4.
Terrible pics and looks much better in hand.

image And '49 is such a neat year too! (yeah, I know, it's Georgia and not California, but still)

Positive BST transactions with: too many names to list! 36 at last count.

During the early gold rush years, a lot of gold was sent from the California gold fields to the southern branch mints including Dahlonega for coinage into legal money. It wouldn't surprise me if your coin had gold from California in it.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

it would have had to travel cross country fairly quicly to have made it into the 49D but it wasn't unheard of.

In 1849 the gold minted in Dahlonega was still local. California gold deposits were not seen in Dahlonega until 1851. Much of the gold coined between 1851 and 1854 contained California gold.

Starting in 1850 most California gold was being struck by private minters in the San Francisco area.

The earliest California Gold deposit made in Dahlonega was in 1850. By the end of 1851 deposits of California Gold exceeded deposits of local gold. And in 1853 California Gold deposits represented nearly 80% of annual deposits. As we know the San Fran Mint opened in 1854 and by 1855 the amount of California Gold deposited in Dahlonega had diminished substantially and no longer represented a significant amount.

Anyway, providing the mint records are accurate regarding the first California Gold deposits the above 1849-D Qtr Eagle does not contain any California Gold.
