Did you pull that 1972 card out of a pack or did you find it raw?

I bought it on Ebay. It was a PSA 9 to begin with, then EOT, then PSA 10.

    I think I payed about $20 for it as a PSA 9.

I think it's a POP 5. I still have it, it's the building block of my J.R. Richard Master Set.

I sent in a crackout of a GAI 6 Wm Muldoon 1887 Allen and Ginter and it came back a PSA 7.

I sent in an SGC 1887 n184 Kimballs Duncan C. Ross which was an equivalent to a "4" and it came back a PSA 6. Highest one ever graded.

My only real loss is cracking out a CSA 8 (who is that anyway?) n162 1888 Goodwins Duncan C. Ross and it came back "altered". That was not a surprise but it was worthless in the case it was in.

I have only done a few crackouts, but those were really nice. I have never cracked out a PSA card and had it regraded although I have plenty of candidates to do so.

In 2002 I bought a smoking Jim Brown RC in a PSA 7 holder at Fort Washington for around $200 and cracked it, flicked off a little booger (actually a fleck of card stock) and resubbed it and got a PSA 9 that I sold for $4000 a few months later at White Plains. In 1998, I bought a boatload of ARod SP's at the National in Chicago and subbed them to PSA. Cracked the nicest, virtually flawless PSA 9 and subbed it to SGC and got the famous SGC 100 that I sold on eBay for a paltry $1400+ (I was getting about $800-1000 for PSA 10's) before I, or anyone else, knew the real significance of the SGC 100 grade and before I was eventually employed by them. I wish I still had both!

Great for you but, man, if that card doesn't just draw a big red circle around the flaws of the grading process...

I think the reason this thread is interesting is because it's situations like this that are the exception not the rule. On modern stuff I've had plenty of BGS 8.5's flip to 10's.

I think the person who was working the slab machine sells on eBay. Sounds like an order of mine last month.

Some that I can recall, though not big money cards):

1969 Phil Niekro - Graded 8 (ST) the first time because I forgot to rub the wax of the front. I cracked it, buffed it and resubmitted and it came back 9(NQ)
1989 UD Griffey RC - Graded 8 the first time (when it was valuable). Cracked it and resub'd it a few years ago and it came back a 10.
1974 Aaron #1 - Graded 8 the first time. Cracked and resubbed and got a 9.
1961 Billy Goodman - A fairly tough common, I got a 6 the first time. I thought it was 8 quality and resubmitted it and got the 8.
1973 Schmidt RC - Pulled from a pristine set I bought off eBay in the late 90s. Subbed it a national in Anaheim and it came back an 8. I challenged the grade but Steve Rocchi said the grader would only give me a 9(PD) since it had two tiny print specs on the Schmidt photo. I walked the show and saw a handful of other Schmidt rookies in 9(NQ) holders that had worse print snow than mine. I cracked it later and got the 9(NQ) though not without drama. They mislabeled the card with the other rookie infielders label. Fortunately I caught it when my grades posted and was able to get it corrected before they shipped it back to me.

I also had some great success on reviews. The best was when my '71 Raymond bumped from an 8 to a 9. I traded it for $5k worth of cards. I also had a 1970 Bench bump from 8 to 9.

LOL exactly what i was thinking. so one grader decides it is mint. the next grader says the card had a visitor, then the last grader says its a perfect card image
