Coin population on ebay as selling point?

erwindocerwindoc Posts: 5,171 ✭✭✭✭✭
Do you think it is appropriate for sellers to use the population of a coin to sell it, especially if their information is incorrect/misleading? The population of this coin is 18/1, not top population as this seller is hinting. What do you think? I guess the reason it burns me is I have the 1 that is higher at MS68 across the pond in my registry!

It is never appropriate to provide inaccurate info. Drop him a line and let him know about your MS68.

Definitely a little shady. He's got 100% positive feedback though...
Positive BST transactions with: too many names to list! 36 at last count.

I wouldn't automatically call him shady, NGC (and PCGS) are not so good at updating their pop reports and it may well be that the last time he checked it was the top. Personally I think you should check the pops yourself if you are using it to help price a coin, but there you go. I've bought (or made) several coins that are higher than the pop reports show, sometimes it months before a new one shows up in the reports.
  • I've seen this with currency as well, sellers stating "only 14 known!" that actually translates to.... it's a common US note, there are 48 of them on EBay right now, the specific currency grading service has only graded 18 in EX condition but they've graded hundreds of this note in various different conditions, other grading services have graded this note in EX grade as well.
  • Fantasycoins has registry sets on Pcgs
He has sets in Dimes. Drop him a PM and let him know.

    Listing has been corrected.
  • personally, if i was going to buy a coin, the population would not influence my decision to buy, im thinking those who do play the registry game know it top to bottom and would not be adversely affected by false claims, no matter if that false claim was made purposely or inadvertantly. i mean, you guys put alot of money into the notion of having the best of the best, im guessing you know what youre buying.

It is quite possible that there could be only 14 known from a particular district and signature set while the note as a type could have 100 or 1000s of examples.

An example would be $2 1918 FRBN Battleship ~ Atlanta District ~ Bell-Mcord Signatures FR. 763 ~ a non-star semi-key note. But, of course there are 1000s of known Battleship notes.
