That 9 is wildly overgraded; the centering subgrade seems like a flat-out entry error it's so egregious. The card certainly has endemic centering issues, yet this specimen is centered far worse than most.
Seems like a combination of a bidder with an unsightly number of retractions, and someone buying the sticker.
Erik. Sorry to hear you got swindled on the HSN set. The information available now about Star cards is so much improved from years ago. With a little bit of study and knowledge it is actually easier to tell authentic from fake Star imo compared to say the 1986 Fleer Jordan but you have to know where to look. Here is a link to a website started by a die hard Star basketball collector which is just super educational. I am hope this helps.

Oh its all good. I actually really wanted that set and i only paid about $250 for it on ebay. I was happy with the buy I just hadn't known about the HSN issues which I spent a weekend after that researching as much as possible about the HSN cards. I spent a good amount of time on basketballgold that weekend and not long after I bought a couple bgs graded MJ Star cards on ebay from the guy that runs that site. I actually look out for the HSN stuff just because its pretty rare,Those MJ sets/cards don't pop up often. There's a guy on ebay that has 3 to 4 of the red Bulls Arena sets listed at 21k & 23K and last weekend he had one up for $385 for a day then went back to 21k the next. I wasn't able to grab it while it was cheap.
Thanks for the link though.
I've never really understood this since hearing about it. Why does it matter if the card was printed in 1985 or 1992? Both came from the same source, and if nobody can "tell the difference", it just shouldn't matter. These are picture cards, not a knock-off Rolex or Louis Vuitton purse made with substandard materials in some basement in China.
I actively collect Kirby Puckett. I have collections of Michael Jordan, Emmitt Smith, Roberto Clemente, Dwight Gooden, Tom Seaver, Errict Rhett and Evan Longoria.

I'm not sure Star printed the same cards 10+ years later,i think it was more that they printed out never before seen Michael Jordan sets and advertized them as 1984-85 cards. I think the finish on the front was different too. The HSN stuff had a glossy finish compared to the original Star card from the mid 80's. These are the HSN cards I have. The blue MJ came from a 1985 Star 84 Gold Medalists 9 card set that also Ewing. Beckett won't grade these and they don't pop up on ebay often. I paid about $250 for each of these sets.
Like Erik said, Star never reprinted the original cards which is a common misconception. They printed the sets Erik posted above years later and then backdated the cards like they were originally produced in 1985 and that is what got them in trouble as they didn't have the license to do it and were deceitful about the production year. Glad you enjoy the HSN cards regardless Erik. That is obviously most important. I believe the reason the HSN cards are so hard to find is because HSN offered to buy back all the unlicensed cards and likely most people took them up on the offer.
I like them just because they're pretty rare. I would have been ok if BGS just encapsulated them because i love their slabs but i was told straight out Beckett doesn't recognize them as official NBA licensed cards like you said.

Looks like someone is selling a GAI 8.5 Star #101 Michael Jordan Fake again. At $1,600 with 10 minutes to go...
