Any concerns buying a U.S. coin from a seller in Mexico?

Never bought from a seller in Mexico before, but assuming there's nothing wrong with it, this Lincoln is going pretty cheap right now:

1911s US Small Cents - Superb - UNC -No Reserve- 1911S

Not 100% sure on this, but it looks OK to me.

  • Personally, I dont buy outside the U.S., unless its a major auction house or a very well known dealer.

Why take the chance... Plus, the coin doesnt look to be anything that special to me at least. Id rather buy something I know is a solid deal. JM2C

If the white balance in the photo is okay, the color of the coin does not look natural.

These things are not rare. Find an U.S. seller than you trust.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

You're probably right about that, but if I can pick it up for AU money (or less) then I'd still consider it a pretty good deal. Having anticipated a jump in demand for earlier-date Lincolns due to the design changes this year, I've been on a buying spree lately for some of these bargain-priced key/semi-key Lincolns. Just wondering if I should add this particular one to my shopping list. However, I've never purchased from a seller outside of the U.S. before (except Canada, I think). Too risky?

You could be giving Mexican drug gangs your address and knowledge that you collect coins.

you've got PAYPAL to reimburse for non-delivery

my concern would be authenticity and whether I would be able to tell with coin in hand - I can detect bad fakes, but not si sure about better ones

If the toning doesn't look right you could always place in it one of those "cough cough" napkins.
  • After looking at his other coins, the '11-S seems to have the most potential. Hard to know, however, because his pics make everything look so screwy. At least we know it doesn't have rim dings, or large black spots like his IHC's. Best case scenario, it could be a nice AU-58, if not previously cleaned.

It's got to be safer than buying a U.S. coin from China.image

  • Not if it was a Mexican coin. Otherwise, why take the risk?

What's so good about picking up a cleaned AU for AU money? I'd pass and look elsewhere. That way you're guaranteed not to lose anything on this deal.
