If you could start all over................

or had the resourses to build another set in addition to the one you are working on, what would it be? I collect toned classic commems and toned 33-47 walkers. I would LOVE to start a Toned proof Trade dollar set but I'm right smack in the middle of building the other two..............MJ

I really like the design on the Standing Liberty quarter, a bunch of those with some color and FH's wouldn't be hard to take!

I am much too involved with the United States half dimes of all series to even consider starting another collection, but if I were to do so it would most certainly be Liberty Seated quarters. Even though the same Gobrecht design appears on all of the Liberty Seated denominations, there is just something about the size and proportion of the Liberty Seated quarter design that really attracts me. Having seen a portion of the fabulous collection belonging to Coinosaurus on these boards, I would like to do something like he has done (Remember, this is if I had the resources). I understand that Lathmatch (Ray) also has a very nice collection of Liberty Seated quarters.

In all things, I work best when I do one job at a time. If I could start all over I'd not allow myself to become as distracted and fragmented in my collecting. There's too much to learn and I'm not being efficient in collecting the knowledge I need.

Sometimes I miss my half cent collection, but then I remember some of the really low grade coins I had for some varieties, and I snap back to reality. Today it would be even harder to replace the stuff I had then.

So to be honest I wouldn't change a thing.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

If I were to start over from scratch, I would collect Large Size Bust Dimes and Quarters by variety, and Bust Half Dollars by Overton in the years 1807-24. I would insist on a minimum of AU 50 grade on all but the very rarest. I would probably cross everything to PCGS.

Classic Commemoratives have dropped in value so much, that I would not start collecting them again.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

I generally collect type and I like my collection very much. If I had to start again it would be to collect the same material.

  • If I could start over I would sell everthing I had and start a box of only 20 coins the best I could afford and thats all I want is just 20. I still could do it but it would break my heart to sell all.

The first sets I worked on were Lincolns, Buffs, Mercs, SLQs and WLHs before I really knew what I was doing. I'd like to redo them all again with a better eye and a better understanding of the series - unfortunately I can't afford to.

    Nah.

I'm quite satisfied with where I am now.

Not that I mind learning, but to become educated in an entirely new series is time consuming and I know I'd make some mistakes again.

Which is fine. But I like what I have & I have what I like.

If I had the resources, I'd buy a few sports cars rather than more coins in another series.
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

I made that decision three months ago and have enjoyed every day since. Seeing that horrible Lincoln cent flag back.....that was what pushed the baby carriage over the cliff.

thankfully there are still a lot of people buying pennies............But Im all over dollar gold like a fly on poo

    I have two thoughts:

Plan A) collect early copper. If I had started doing that when I got into the hobby over 30 years ago, I would know a lot and have a vast collection. Unrealistic, because I don't have the grading chops to navigate that market (and never will). That and being a cheapskate at heart would likely mean a lot of problem coins.

Plan B) skip numismatic coins all together and just focus on common silver coins and common gold coins near melt value. I would be light years ahead financially compared to where I am now (at least double, possibly quadruple). This is realistic, but would be rather boring.

Go back in time to 2000 and buy all the BU $20 libs you could find for $400-$450.

    Seriously

    <<Toned Commems and WLH's, you did good>>

Some dealers/collectors find that an odd combination. But, I attempt to explain this way-----Toned commems appeal to my fasination with history and I like the variety aspect of not just collecting one design type. I have A.D.D so I don't get bored with these. As for the toned walkers- they are TOUGH, plus it's beautiful design.....so that speaks to the thrill of the hunt....................If I didn't collect these I would probably collect patterns and Andy L would put me in the poor house : )
