Newp SLQ....I'm on a roll!

coinlieutenantcoinlieutenant Posts: 9,315 ✭✭✭✭✭
It can be over six months between coin collection additions, so the last 30 days have certainly been anomalous.
Just got this one in the mail from Broadstruck. Many thanks to him. Old NGC fattie holder graded MS64...not FH interestingly enough. I grade the coin a solid 65FH.

The toning is almost certainly from the holder as I have seen it before. I have a peace dollar with the exact same look and holder...

The luster makes this a coin. Very creamy and thick under the toning. Just the way I like em!

Enjoy. I wish I had better pics. Just shot it quickly...and I am no Mark Goodman. image

I'll take a roll of SLQ's like that, please! image

You may not be Mark Goodman or Phil Arnold, but you're ahead of me, anyway. That one's a beaut, and with better pictures it must be a real eyepopper.

Gonna crack it and resubmit for that FH and possible point bump? Get TrueView while you're at it.

Then again, I understand the old fattie holders have a following, so if you like the old plastic, just leave 'er be, I guess.

    A beautiful looking SLQ.

I have dealt with Broadstruck on many occasions. He has a great eye for quality coins.

    Congrats on the pickup.

Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

I've got a type 2, in PCGS plastic, that has a FH designation and it's not half as nice as that one. Congrats! Beautiful, beautiful coin...

I've been looking at SLQ's with the idea of adding one to the commems, for balance, that would do nicely!!!

Don't see how that wasn't designated FH. It surely looks like one.image

I have no reason to doubt your opinion of the grade..................65 FH!

Imo, three series where it is tough to find attractive coins are Liberty Nickels, Barber Halves and SLQs. Re your coin, the main diff re 4, 5 & 6 are surfaces and luster. I find that it's very easy to find contact marks on a 4, a little less so on a 5 & you should really have to look for them on a 6. The surfaces on this coin look very clean. I'm also unclear why your coin isn't designate FH. The details are there, though they don't jump out at you on this image as with some other 17P Type Is I've seen.

    That is a sweet toner!!!

I think you are spot on about the NGC fatty tone. I have a seated half with very similar tone and I don't think it was slabbed that way. I like the results, bring back the fatty!

The color on this first pick is not quite correct but it shows the slab.

This second picture shows the toned color that I associate with the fatty.

  • Great looking coin for sure.

Question though, I thought the slabs were inert?
  • SouthcountySouthcounty Posts: 661 ✭✭✭✭

I think the plastic slab material is inert, although not always air tight. However, my thinking is that some chemicals in the paper label that are not specifically sealed off from the coin in the slab give a particular look that is a bit hard to describe, but seems consistent on several examples.

So if I sent in a toner back in the day, my toned coin could have turned ugly due to the extra toning?
  • SouthcountySouthcounty Posts: 661 ✭✭✭✭
I tend to think that a coin that is already partly toned is less receptive to further tone in the NGC fatty but I suppose anything is possible.

This SLQ is in a old non bar code holder during a period when NGC did not designate Type One FH's, as they just felt they all where.

Cline published it was rarer to find one that wasn't FH.

I used to collect SLQ's - have always liked them - the 17 and 27D are really nice coins.
  • jomjom Posts: 3,451 ✭✭✭✭✭
Nice coins. Love the 17 and 27-D. I don't collect FH myself unless it has nice tone and it doesn't have a huge premium. Otherwise, I just stick with nice toned coins non-FH. Here are a couple of mine. image
