Why are 2008 W Silver Proof Eagles so expensive

Did they sell out at the US Mint early on? What are the mintages? Will there be a 2009 W?

The expensive 2008-W Variety is the 2008-W reverse of 2007. Link.

This Variety is an unintended combination of the new 2008-W obverse die combined with the old 2007-W reverse die. There were some 40,000+ coins minted with this die marrieage. Consequently, the 2008-W Reverse of 2007 is a sought-after modern rarity. And that explains why it is more expensive than the average 2008-W Unc. ASE.

EDITED: Duh! I just eplained why the Unc. 2008-W rev. of 2007-W's garner a premium. I haven't a clue about the PROOF's except that there was such a demand for the Unc./Bullions that the Proofs were somewhat limited in strike. image

The Mint stopped selling the proofs early last year because they needed the silver blanks for the business strikes and were unable to obtain sufficient quantities for the proofs & W MS's. I believe that over 700k were sold before they suddenly went dark. I suppose it's a case of a temporary supply versus demand issue.
