I have a secret. This is why Hugh is now in Alaska instead of Canada on the Dalton. I hired him to sneak over there, pass off the "cargo" to Lisa, who will eventually visit Wassala and pass it off to our favorite soon to be ex governor.
This is why she had to resign.
She will be bringing it down to split with me during a "speaking engagement" in about 5 weeks.
Well, if you worked at the mint in the shipping department, you could rob em. Your friends and family members order a silver one ounce coin, you send a gold one ounce coin to them. They order one gold coin, you send them a hundred gold coins. Oh ya................ and no ones the wiser. You and they get rich.

I suspect the gold is still there. What probably happened is that it was accidentally used to strike the upcoming series of 37 1/3c coins commemorating the History of Marsupials. These new coins were supposed to be made of aluminum-bronze and the gold, being similar in color, was used by mistake. Now, all thay have to do is remove the electroplating and holograms and it's all good.
Yeah, but it is only 0.33% of the total metal used.
That being said, it brings me back to the days I made automotive catalyst with platinum, palladium, and rhodium. The stuff was so valuable the bean counters wanted me to count the metal damn near to the atom! Unfortunately, it was impossible to reconcile the inventory exactly, but we were much closer than 0.33%.
In the end, I would think the RCM could inventory planchets to the piece and be very exact. That is a no-brainer compared to doing an inventory on metal sponge or solutions. Then again, maybe the RCM has a bit of brain freeze that is hard to spin. The phrase in the Coin World article "current poor record keeping cannot explain the missing gold" speaks volumes to me.

I question whether we will ever know for sure if the gold is actually missing or unaccounted for - what an embarrassment if it were truly stolen. Cheers, RickO
