New Morgan Dollar Purchase, guess the grade...

I just got this one online, it seems undergraded for what the slab says.
What do you think?

The seller has a return policy which is nice.
I think I'll like this one, though.

The 1902-O dollar comes fully struck fairly often. It's much easier to find with full strike than the 1904-O.

I guress since you say this thing is over graded I'll say it says MS-64 on the label. Given the dull look and the flat breast feathers, I'd only grade it MS-62.

It all comes down to luster, which is hard to gauge from the photos. I'll take a wild guess with 63.

MS64 (due to the typical weak O-Mint strike)

MS64 with a weak strike that keeps it from 65. New Orleans had plenty of this
date with a strong strike, but that coin sure does look "clean" as in no cheek hits.

    I would give it 64.

If you think it's undergraded why would you mention the return policy....Would you return an undergraded coin?

Pics are tough but maybe a weak strike 64 (or a 58)
  • If you think it undergraded it might be an AU58.
I am going to just take a shot in the dark with this one, MS63

64 seems most likely grade. Too weakly struck for 65, as 1902-O is available with a full strike.

I, too, agree with the MS64 assessment. It looks lovely.

The 1902 O Morgan is usually an unattractive coin due to weak strike and mediocre luster! (Some one said the 1904 O is also this way, but the '04 is more common in attractive condition than the '02 O by far).
I assume, due to lack of abrasions, you thought this coin should have gone MS65, but the holder sports the correct grade of MS64 UNLESS the luster is even more subdued than it appears, in which case a grade of MS63 wouldn't be too far out fo line. I like it as a 64 myself.

    Thanks for the replies.
It is a 64 (old slab)

I wonder mainly how the luster will look. The lighting appears to be dim.
    Thanks everyone!
