Ok then- assuming your assumptions are correct, there is no reason the caller couldn't have asked about the availability of other coins not listed, and offered to make a package deal of it if the seller ended his eBay listing and included that coin, too. Could have happened, right?

Of course this could have happened and this could have just as easily not happened. I think I have a pretty good idea of the typical track record of this type of scenario, so I am always going to be a little judgemental regarding ebay auctions that end quickly without an ebay "buyer", especially when all of the seller's contact info is easily accessed through the auction page.

If you don't think the seller is reputable (which you have at least implied a couple of times), why would you even want to buy a coin from him?
edited to add... a coin was listed for sale, and somebody else bought it before you had a chance to- simple as that. I think you're overanalyzing things because you didn't get something you wanted (IMO, a common enough scenario on this message board), but if it helps you to feel better about the situation, I guess that's okay, too.

I don't think I said the seller is not reputable per se, in fact, I think quite the contrary. I'm just not thrilled with this particular avenue of how a coin can be advertised through a reputable venue and then privately sold via that advertisement venue regardless of who the seller might be. Again, conjecture at best, but still a gut feeling that leaves a bad taste in the end.
<< <i>Again, conjecture at best, but still a gut feeling that leaves a bad taste in the end. >>
So... the particulars of the deal are not a known fact, but you are choosing to think the worst of a dealer you think is reputable because of an assumption?
Alot of times coins are for sale in more then 1 venue, first acceptable offer gets the coin, I see that as being an acceptable practice and do not understand what the problem is. Ebay allows for auctions to be ended early and one of the acceptable reasons is "item no longer available". AL
<< <i>Again, conjecture at best, but still a gut feeling that leaves a bad taste in the end. >>

I think it's a very reasonable assumption, based on what the "knowns" are.
<< <i>I think it's a very reasonable assumption, based on what the "knowns" are. >>
I wasn't rating your assumption- just noting that it was one.
I still think if you had called the dealer to buy the coin and had him tell you to go through eBay only to find that in the meantime, someone else bought it, you would have still been unhappy and this thread would still have been started to point out that you can slice the moldy cheese in any way shape or form, but it will still stink.
Now, I know it's just an assumption, but based on what the "knowns" are, it's a reasonable one.

Correction.... you instigated the possibility with this PM, "Nice proof half. Do you have a bottom dollar price in mind for a no eBay no Paypal sale? Between eBay and Paypal, the total commission would be about 10%".
Did I consider it, of course. But did I go through with it??? No! It sold via ebay. Thanks for your input.

I repeat, did I go through with it? no. In fact, I ended up selling it for your exact same outside of ebay offer amount and took the ebay and Paypal fees. Could I have gone back to you at your offer and cut out the fees? Of course. Is that realistically the right thing to do? no. Thanks.
Whether you "went through with it" has no bearing. If you offered to end the listing and sell the coin to Bayard1908 at some price, then you are BUSTED.

That doesn't make sense. You made an offer you knew you weren't going to honor in the first place?
Who cares if Ebay is getting their cut? with their now greedy business plan.
I am just surprised that some of this forum's "Ebay police" (who would rat out an auction for a minor infraction), aren't crying foul and trying to rat out the sellers and buyers who are parties in these auctions that end early (for probable unethical reasons).
A lot of "two faced" folks on this forum.

Nice try. We communicated back and forth and of course I considered it but it was just not the right thing to do.
