I watched it and bid on it to 80 bucks and then got out. I wonder what the toning will look like in person. The toning has been stable for at least 20 years, as you can see it on the certificate photos.

Good Toning

Looks like a steal for the sell price.

Sorry, guys, but it seems for some you that any toning is "good toning." What I see here is heavy dull stuff that grows on a coin after it's been dipped improperly rinsed.

As for the assertion that it has been stable for 20 years, please compare the photo to the coin. In the photo more of the surface was white, untoned. Now it's 90% of the surface is tarnished, not toned.

As for the price $100+ for an 1880-S dollar, which is very common in high grade, is a high price, especially since the market for "widget Morgans" really dead right now. And to most people ANACS papers = raw coin these days.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I don't know what the toning looks like in person, as the photo is not good. However, I disagree that the toning has progressed since the Anacs photos were taken, there is enough in those black and white anacs photos to show that the toning is the same.

As far as people considering those Anacs certificates as raw coins........good, I hope they continue to do that.

  • I think the black and white ANACS photos show that it was pretty much toned to that extent back in '85. That one is pretty crusty. Depending on how it was stored (pre '85), it may never have been dipped. I like it. I believe they could have used ANACS in the auction title and would have done better.

  • I agree with Bill......I am not sure how you folks can say it hasn't progressed in the toning....to me it is crystal clear that the coin is more toned now than it was......that can be a good thing or bad thing depending on how it was stored. I also agree that the toning doesn't look that eye appealing to me but if the coin has the typical S mint pop then it may look ok in hand. I think it's a fair price for the coin but not a steal......I would say that after having the coin slabbed by either Anacs, PCGS or NGC the coin will be worth about what you paid for the coin + grading.....say $150?
