Joe public gets excitment out of getting an old coin in change, only a coin collector could get so uplifted by a current date. Go figure.

Got zilch so far in 2009s except for 3 Log Cabins (2P and 1D). Didn't even know the 2nd Quarter series was out yet. Tomorrow is the start of the 3rd Quarter, maybe 3 will be a charm.

Nada across the board for me.

I got one Lincoln early years cent from a dealer who was giving them away at the spring Baltimore show.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

One log cabin cent and two formative years cents -- nothing else.

I've even enlisted my wife to look for anything dated 2009 in her change.

0 for me, although I did see an irretrievable 2009 cent that someone dropped between the scale tray and frame on a self-checkout kiosk at the grocery store the other day.

any theories as to why they arent releasing much of any new coins into circulation?
are they just too busy printing bills or, some other reason the public isnt to know about?

With the recession, people are raiding their "change buckets" for much needed money. I have seen and heard reports that banks are getting so much coin back from people, that there is no need to order any from the Fed. If the Fed doesn't need it, the mint doesn't produce it...so on and so forth.

    kwmorgan:

Unfortunately, I would have to disagree with your last line:

"If the Fed doesn't need it, the Mint doesn't produce it......"

What explains the preponderance of SBA & SAC $'s that nobody wants and JFK halves that don't even make it into circulation? Stupid laws made by stupid politicians with no more sense than the leave-one/take-one trays at the local 7-11- - that's what!!image
