Universities dumping marching bands and cheerleaders to save money

Florida International University has dropped their marching band and cheerleaders from games in order to cut $1 million from
their athletic budget.
How do you feel about universities cutting in this way to save money in tight budget times?
Cut less popular sports or save the bands and cheerleaders?
Could you imagine Notre Dame with no band or cheerleaders at a football game? It would seem really strange.

probably be smaller bands and fewer cheerleaders than in the past, also, bands may travel to fewer
games than in the past in order to cut down on travel and other related expenses.

I dont think Notre Dame or any school that takes football very seriously would ever do it. FIU's a different story. They're a relatively new FBS school, without a winning season, and only draw about 10,000 per game. USF played them last year down in Miami to draw a decent opponent for the first game in their brand new 20,000 seat stadium. Attendance was only 15,000 or so and 3,000 of that was USF.... I can't wait to see "Coach Thomas'" face for their basketball games. I know he'll draw a lot of people in, but last year they would have games with like 500 people.
A school with the athletic revenue of Florida, USC, Notre Dame, etc. will never face these problems, at least not in the forseeable future.

I'm pretty sure we're still bringing our full band up to Tally for our game vs. FSU, but the team is going by bus rather than flying. Miami also announced that theyll bus up to Tampa for our game, and Tally for their game vs. FSU.
They should cut all sports

<< <i>Better way to save money would be to cut these coach's ridiculous salaries. No way any college coach should be making multi-millions per year coaching kids who can't even get a part time job to help put some cash in their pocket, while the school is cutting programs left and right just to stay solvent. >>
could not have said it any better!

no control over the situation but have expressed their "concern". As long as a school thinks they can
gain an advantage by offering a ton of money to a coach it is never going to stop. One coach making
a ton of money just puts pressure on other schools to up the ante or end up looking like cheapstakes so
it goes on and on...
<< <i>Yep, and schools in the mid-majors have to fight and claw simply to get an at-large bid. >>
And if they're good enough to do so, you know they won't have their coach next year and their program will be pillaged by the BCS haves to the point of eliminating any chances of ascendancy they may have aspired to.
<< <i>Why doesn't Notre Dame drop football? Surely that will be losing money soon, if it is not already. >>
Doubtful.
From the Sports Business Journal:
Texas ranked No. 1 in football with $72.95 million followed by Georgia with $67.05 million, Florida with $66.1 million, Ohio State with $65.16 million and Notre Dame with $59.77 million. The remaining 10 teams in football revenues were Auburn, Michigan (No. 7 with $ 57.46 million), Alabama (No. 8 with $57.37), Penn State University (No. 9 with 53.76 million) and LSU (10th with $52.68 million).
<< <i>You should know that a large number of college coaches make about $2000 or less per season >>
$2,000? Maybe for D-2. Even the graduate assistants at USF are making $55k a year. BTW, USF has the smallest Athletics budget in the entire Big East for football playing members.
One year is how many seasons?
If the lowest part-time assistants for all 17 sports are making that money, the very few guys at the top now seem extremely underpaid

One year=one season.
But, I understand where you're coming from. I was thinking you were just talking about football, not across the board with all the other "non-revenue sports". Still though, most FL high schools pay their football coaches $3k-$8k a season.
<< <i>You should know that a large number of college coaches make about $2000 or less per season >>
Come on, we're talking about big schools, not some junior college. Even so, those coaches making 2000 a season are likely full time teachers at the college they coach at, and the $2000 is added to their salary.
Second, you can book it that THE Ohio State University will never cut the marching band, otherwise known as TBDBITL. ROCK ME!
