5 oz. Engelhard bars

What is a fair price to pat for these?? I was in the local shop the other day and they had 4 of them and wanted $1.50 over spot, these were not the old poured bars but rather the newer style.

APMEX has 5 oz bars (Silvertown and Sunshine Mining Co) for sale at .99 over spot. At least with your local dealer you don't have to pay for shipping so his price isn't too bad.

  • That is a great price for them. They are tuff to find in 5 oz size

I know that the old poured 5 oz. bars are very tough and bring a big premium, you've got a nice selection and should be able to move them on e-bay for big bucks if they don't sell here.
  • I decided to go on a road trip today so I stopped into the coin shop in Fargo and bought the only 2 Englehard 5 oz. bars he had for $1.50 over spot each.
I asked him what other unusual bars they had so he goes in the back and comes out with an assortment of bars from which I gleaned a 5 oz. Argor S.A. / Chiasso, a casino 5 oz. bar which reads Pioneer Round Up Club Hotel & Gambling Hall Laughlin, Nevada with a cowboy on the far right side holding a brand with a big P and a cowboy hat on the back of the bar it has what appears to be the presidential seal with .999 fine Silver above and 5 troy ounces below and on the bottom in tiny letters NCM, 1 oz. and 5 oz. NCM poured bars all of these were bought for $1.00 over spot which for the NCM 1 oz. bar equaled $14.91.image
  • Great deals. Esp the Argor & 1 oz NCM...I sold a 5 oz argor Saturday at auction, Went for $140 I think, 1 oz NCM's normally sell $30+

FYI MKMan has 4 5 oz NCM bars for sale @ $14.50/oz image

WOW, $140 sounds like you did great on that bar and looks like I made some good purchases except for the 5 oz. NCM bar unless MKMan is selling his 5 ouncers for below market value.
  • I'm getting addicted to buying as many different Silver bars as possible, there was one more Chiasso 5 oz. bar at the coin shop so I think I'll call him tomorrow and tell him to set it aside for me until the next time I'm in town.
  • Hey Cars are Argor/Chiasso kilo bars valuable?? I ask as I bought one this spring and it's the only kilo Silver bar that I currently own.
I also picked up a 3 oz. Argor/Chiasso Silver bar a couple weeks ago at the coin shop for $1.50 over spot I suppose this bar would bring a nice premium over spot too.

No, The kilo doesn't carry much of a premium. Saturday I sold a 1, 2, 3, 5 oz Argor sa Chiasso bars seperatly. $26, $63, $93, $131. I also have 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 gram from Argor, They carry nice premiums as well image

Actually a forum member bought the 3 oz from me...

Why do these smaller bars bring such big premiums, were they made in limited quantities compared to the larger bars or is it simply that people can afford the smaller bars more easily than kilo or 100 oz. bars??

I assume its a number of things on top of what you already mentioned.

Art bar collectors normally focus on smaller bars under 5 oz. Smaller Swiss bars always bring a premium. As I stated in another thread its hard to get those sellers to ship over here and rarely are they offered for sale in the US. 2 & 3 oz bars are also an odd size which is what draws many buyers. Why do Pamp Suisse bars sell for $40+/oz when they are still made today? Maybe it has something to do with the VAT they have to pay on the silver therefor increasing the premium for suisse bars.

Well I guess this is as good an explanation as any. I do like the look of these bars and I must admit there is a certain charm in owning a 1 gram or 2 ounce bar, like you said they are odd sized bars and I suppose people think it's fun to collect them.
