I was detecting an old lakeside park once when an old guy asked me this. I could tell he was kinda mocking me. I'd just found a 1916 wheat cent in real high grade. I pulled it out and showed it to him. It turned out to be his birth year. He offered me $5 for it on the spot. I gave it to him for free and went about my business.
Best one I tried was "Just practicing now, I head for my secret gold area next week for four days - that is when I will bring back the big stuff." Cheers, RickO

If they press further I say "Pocket change." or "Battery money".
