I just noticed TomB's comment on the previous Jules Reiver ownership, and vaguely remember a thread on this coin. It is not the same 1802 in the Reiver auction, as he sold it well before that time. The Reiver/Brown/TomB/Stman pedigree definately adds value! image

You're kidding, right!? While I can appreciate your dislike of "plastic", in this instance, here are but a few reasons Pro-Plastique:

Without the slab the coin would NEVER sell for anywhere close to what it's worth!

Without the slab, the main questions that would run through any sane potential buyer's mind would be -

1- What's wrong with this coin? A coin worth as much as this should be certified to remove any & all doubt!
2- Is this piece Genuine or is it COUNTERFEIT? - Same response! The Plastic removes any & ALL doubt.

Some piece simply are not even worth the Plastic they are entombed in BUT, in cases such as this -
whenever rarities or key coins worth substantial amounts are involved - a potential buyer IS NOT
going to be comfortable buying it or paying anywhere CLOSE to it's worth ... without the plastic.

    FACT! image

IOW, you're saying that there are no problem coins in non-problem slabs.

IOW, you're saying there are no such things as counterfeit slabs, the potential for counterfeit slabs, or counterfeit coins in real slabs.

I suspect you won't find much agreement with these.

Here is my 1822 CBH I alluded to in my post earlier in this thread. It has the details of a higher grade but PCGS gave it only a XF40, due to the lack of luster, much like the 1802 DBH in this thread.

    Nice Coin.
How much ? image Have you a picture in the PCGS holder ?
    Where's LeeG and DorkKarl ?

RIP Bear and so many who've passed in the last 3 years.

How did such a nice coin turn into a debate about a slab or counterfeits ? Why , it's no wonder decent threads die off. I suppose the kool aid tastes bitter to some, more than others. And the pedigree, provenance, slab, and WHO SOLD it matters more than the coin.

Anyway, not to spam you but if you want to sell it image I'd be interested if TomB didn't want it back image
